What It Feels Like Driving The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e

BMW may be better known for its innovative i sub-brand, like the i3 and i8, but little did we know that the i-inspired X5 xDrive40e SUV impresses too. And by that, we meant really impressive. Looking as fiercely as ever but still having a touch of tranquility coming from the handsome styling, this BMW SUV is indeed pretty attractive.

At the heart of this luxury SUV lies a combination of a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor that powers up to 308 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque. You might think that the engine’s responsible in bringing most of the ponies, but the electric motor plays a strong role too: contributing a maximum of 111 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. And for the gigantic size of the xDrive40e, it’s also safe to say that it wouldn’t be undergoing any weight-loss regimen anytime soon, all thanks to the battery pack and electric motor weighing at 5,220 pounds.

It’s also good to know that driving with the Sport mode on is the fastest way to recharge the battery on the go, whereas the Comfort/Save offers the best blend of fuel efficiency while achieving maximum energy recapture. And though the Sport function might be the ideal mode to opt on, when there is constant throttle application (for instance, while travelling at 70 mph or above), there’s really no chance to take complete advantage of it.

So, there you have it. The BMW xDrive40e that listens to the i lessons well, therefore, ultimately making it a much more subtle, enjoyable ride.
