Toyota Thinks Level 5 Autonomous Tech Still Far Away

While Toyota seems confident that self-driving cars will play a huge role in the future, it also seems to think that a completely automated Level 5 system is not close to ready yet.

According to James Kuffner, the chief executive of Toyota’s global research division, there is so many restrictions to the driver assistance system that they are developing and that if they wanted a Level 5, they could do it now with all the restricting but at the end of the day, it is not what they want.

He added that he thinks that by the late 2020s will we start to see perfected autonomous driving on the surface level roads. He also thinks that companies hyping up the self-driving cars are dampening the public’s perception of the tech although he does think the tech will have a huge impact on the market later on.
