Two of the top smartphones at the moment are the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. Of course this will change as Apple has launched their new iPhone 5 which we are waiting to have some hands-on time with. So in the meantime, how does the flagship Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nokia Lumia 920 match up against each other?

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Nokia Lumia 920

The Samsung Galaxy S3 can be bought now and it is super-fast with the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor here in the US (quad core Exynos overseas). It has a beautiful 4.8 inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720. It comes with 2GB of RAM and 16 GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage with SD card support. The camera is 8 megapixels and it has a 1.9MP on the front. The battery gives around 11.6 hours of talk time as it is 2,100mAh and ICS is loaded with an update to Jelly Bean coming soon.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is powered by a similar 1.5GHz Snapdragon dual core processor and it has a screen of 4.5 inches with a resolution of 1280 x 768. It has 32GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM. The camera is a whopping 8.7 megapixels PureView and the front camera is 1.2 megapixels. The battery of 2,000mAh will allow talk time of up to 10 hours and the device comes with Windows Phone 8 installed. It is thought that it will be available around November.

The screen on the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been praised but the PureMotion HD+ of the Lumia appears better in the short time we had with it. In fact, it will likely top the iPhone 5 in this department as well. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with more RAM and storage choices as the Lumia 920 lacks SD card support. When it comes to the design of the handset the Lumia is the clear winner and the same is true of the camera. It especially beats the camera of the Samsung Galaxy S3 in low light conditions hands down.

Both devices have their pros and cons and of course one of the factors deciding which is best for you comes down to the OS. Android is very popular and around 1.3 million devices are activated on a daily basis. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has sold around 20 million units since its launch so the Lumia 920 does have some catching up to do. If you want a Windows powered handset then the Lumia 920 is the one to go for. However when it comes down to software, we still can’t help but feel Android has the upperhand over Windows, for now.

Verdict: Samsung Galaxy S3 takes the cake for better software while the Nokia Lumia 920 is ahead on the hardware front.
