Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4: Who Da Boss?

By  |

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been on sale for 6 months and it is available anywhere in the US and around the world. The LG Nexus 4 on the other hand was only released in November and right now you cannot get it as it is sold out thanks to it having superb reviews and supplies being limited.

The two devices are similar in a lot of ways and yet in others they are miles apart. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available with all the US carriers, however the LG Nexus 4 is like gold dust, even with T-Mobile. So apart from sales, how do the two handsets compare against each other?

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Super AMOLED display with a size of 4.8 inches. Some people thought that this might be too difficult to hold, however as the bezel is thin and it has edges that are rounded, this turned out not to be the case.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with a display that is slightly smaller at 4.7 inches. As the difference is just 0.1 inches, the Nexus 4 has the sharper display, thanks to the ppi being denser. Both devices have different types of screens. The one of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is Super AMOLED and the LG Nexus 4 has the IPS LCD display.

The colours on the display of the LG Nexus 4 are the most realistic and also easy to see in direct sun. The Super AMOLED screen found on the Samsung Galaxy S3 tends to have blacks that are deep and the colours do seem to be more vibrant. There are some people that consider them to be hyper real and when the display is set to maximum brightness it is still too dim in direct sun. The winner here is the Nexus 4.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 does have its disadvantages in regards to the OS as it is shipped with ICS. On the plus side it has been updated just about everywhere to Jelly Bean 4.1. The Galaxy S3 also has add-ons by way of TouchWiz.

The Nexus 4 comes with the purest Android experience with Jelly Bean 4.2. this means that is has features and options that are new, including Google Now, Gesture Typing and Photo Sphere.

Both of the devices are very easy to use. However the Nexus 4 will be the first to get updates, ahead of the Galaxy S3 and due to this fact it is the winner.

Both devices come with processors that are powerful and the Nexus has the S4 Pro quad core processor 1.5GHz, while the Galaxy S3 comes with the dual core processor of 1.5GHz. both phones have 2GB of RAM, however it is the Nexus that has the advantage, at least on paper, as it has more core. The international version of the S3 has the quad core processor but it comes with just 1GB of RAM. This means that the Nexus 4 wins.

The Galaxy S3 is the best device for storage as you can get it in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and it takes an SD card which can be boosted by another 64GB. The Nexus on the other hand is available in 8GB or 16GB and there is no support for SD card and so the winner has to be the Galaxy S3.

Both of the cameras come with some superb features. They both have a camera on the back of 8 megapixels and they can both record in HD at 1080p with 30 frames per second. The cameras also come with face detection and have flash and many other features.

In regards to the front cameras the Galaxy S3 is the winner with 1.9 megapixels compared to the 1.3 of the Nexus 4. However there is not really a lot of difference, so this can be classed as a draw.

The devices come with batteries of 2100mAh; however the battery on the Galaxy S3 can be removed. In tests from AnandTech the battery of the Galaxy S3 was the one that lasted the longest in the real world and so the Galaxy S3 is the winner.

You can get the Nexus 4 for $200 with a contract and you would pay around the same for the Galaxy S3. On the other hand you can get the Nexus 4 from Google Play Store unlocked and off contract for $299, while you would have to pay $600 for the Galaxy S3 unlocked and off contract. The winner has to be the Nexus 4.

The Galaxy S3 came out in the summer and it has been one of the best-selling handsets with Android. As technology improves, this will change of course, as generally handsets don’t remain at the top for long. The Nexus has what is needed and it could be the device of the year next year.

Thanks to the superb price and features the Nexus 4 might well knock the Galaxy S3 from its pedestal. The Nexus 4 has won four categories here and the Galaxy S3 took two. However you might want to consider the fact that the Nexus 4 doesn’t have LTE and there is no way of expanding it. However if you can managed without these then it could very well be the perfect handset for you.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, PC, iPhone and Android games keep Berke busy at work all day. Honestly though we’re not sure why we’re paying him as it should be the other way around.
