Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5: Flexibility vs Luxury

By  |

The iPhone 5 is lighter, faster and thinner than previous models and is a great piece of technology. However there is another phone that is top of the class at the moment, the Samsung Galaxy S3, so the battle is on between the two handsets to find out which is the better phone.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 was announced on 12th Sept and the Samsung Galaxy S3 in May of 2012. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 topped 2 million and the device was in demand from the early stages. During the first weekend it sold more than 5 million units and more than 2 million within 24 hours.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has also done very well with the handset selling well over 10 million units since it was released. It is thought that by the end of 2012 the S3 will have sold 30 million plus units and the iPhone around 26 million.

The iPhone 5 comes with a battery that is non-removable and it just 7.6mm thick. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a removable batter and is 8.6mm thick. The iPhone 5 has metal casing while that of the S3 is plastic.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is larger than the iPhone 5, but then it does have a larger display. It is 71mm and the iPhone is 58mm wide.

The screen on the iPhone 5 is Retina at 4 inches with 640 x 1136 resolution and the display of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 4.8 inches and Super AMOLED 1280 x 720 resolution.  The iPhone 5 display has jumped up from 3.5 inches, while some say that the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is too large for a mobile phone. Apple say that their retina display is better in bright sunlight than the Super AMOLED.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on Android 4.0 ICS out of the box and Android offers far more flexibility than iOS 6 does. Anyone looking to customise their home screen will be better off with Android than iOS. The S3 comes with Google maps, while Apple made a boo boo and removed it in favour of their own app, which doesn’t work right for many.

The iPhone 5 comes with a dual core 1.2GHz A6 processor, which is said to be twice as fast as the iPhone 4S and has 1GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core Exynos 1.4GHz Cortex A9 processor and it too is very fast. In the US however the S3 has a dual core processor and 2GB of RAM.

The Galaxy S3 has support for microSD card and the iPhone 5 does not and Apple has changed their 30 pin connector to what they call a Lightning port. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the easiest device to use when it comes to transferring photos, videos and music and you can just drag and drop to the phone via the USB cable.

The iPhone 5 comes with a camera of 8 megapixels, with LED flash and the Samsung Galaxy S3 also has an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash. The camera of the iPhone 5 has been upgraded since the iPhone 4S and it can record HD video and take photos at the same time. It has face detection, touch focus, geo tagging, panorama and video stabilisation.

The camera on the S3 also has a range of features, which include image stabilisation, 1080p video and the recording of photos and video at the same time.

The battery of the iPhone 5 is 1440mAh which is said to last around 40 hours of audio playback and 8 hours of talk time and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a battery of 2100mAh which is around 20% better than rivals.

Which is the best phone for you would all depend on whether you want a device that runs on iOS 6 or you prefer the flexibility of Android. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has support for external memory and the iPhone 5 does not. However the iPhone 5 has the better design and looks the more expensive of the two handsets, which it is. If you want a large display then the S3 may be the perfect choice, but the iPhone 5 is for those with smaller hands and pockets.
