Galaxy Note 2 vs iPad Mini: Role Reversal Still Sees Korean Win

By  |

When Apple revealed their iPad Mini to the world people began to wonder just how it would stack up against the tablets that were already on the market in the smaller category. Many people say that it will beat them, even with the price tag that is higher. While the iPad Mini has been compared to other tablets in the 7 inch category, how does it compare against the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phablet?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs iPad Mini

Power & Storage: The Apple iPad Mini features the A5 chip, and while this isn’t the latest processor, it’s not slow. It also comes with PowerVR GPU and this ensures that it provides gaming that is solid and the temperature is decent. The device also has 1GB of RAM and you can get it in black or white versions and in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 comes with the Exynos 1.6GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. It has a powerful GPU and is available in 16GB or 32GB and has SD card support for up to 64GB. The Note 2 is ahead of the iPad Mini when it comes to the processor, RAM and the amount of storage. Advantage: Samsung Galaxy Note 2 both times (power & storage)

Screen: The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has a display of 5.5 inches and 306ppi. The iPad Mini lacks the Retina display; however it does look good due to its size. Advantage: iPad Mini

OS: The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 runs on Jelly bean and the iPad Mini has iOS 6, with more than 200 new features, according to Apple. The App Store is home to a larger selection of apps than Google Play has. However bear in mind that the Note 2 doesn’t run on apps for tablets per-se and so it has access to more than 600,000 phone apps. The iPad Mini comes out on top thanks to it actually supporting tablet apps. Advantage: iPad Mini

Camera: The camera on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is 8 megapixels on the back and there is a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The iPad Mini offers a 5 megapixel iSight camera and a 2 megapixel on the back, which can record 720p videos. The lens on the camera comes with 5 elements and this provides excellent image quality, even when taking photos in dim light. The Note 2 however is the winner thanks to the camera being faster and it taking better photos overall . The Note 2 is also easier to hold as it is the smaller of the two. Advantage: Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Connectivity: The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 boats a universal micro USB connector while the iPad Mini needs a proprietary lightning connector. The Android also supports NFC, MHL and GPS, while the Mini has none of these. Advantage: Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Bottom line: The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has taken more categories than the iPad Mini and so it wins. However you do have to consider trade-offs which could tip the balance in the favour of Apple as well despite winning fewer categories. The iPad uses tablet apps and it comes with a lower price tag. The Note 2 unlocked is $500 at least, the iPad Mini starts at $329. At the same time the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 does come with numerous extras, such as GPS and calling capabilities. But then this is a comparison of tablets, so these can’t be counted in.

It is interesting to of course see a comparison between a Samsung and an Apple product where for once, the Korean device has the smaller display of the duo.
