Lumia 920 vs iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3: It’s A Shootout!

By  |

Cameras on mobile phones started off as a novelty, but they have changed and become an essential feature. So much so that they can make or break a handset.

So which phone of our current crop has the best camera? TUAW decided to hold a camera contest, with the Samsung Galaxy S3, the HTC One X, the Nokia PureView 808, the iPhone 5 and the Nokia Lumia 920 as the contestants. As you can see, the three heavy hitters are in the comparison so this is going to be interesting.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Nokia Lumia 920 & 808 vs HTC One X (camera test)

The iPhone 5 camera went head-to-head against the Nokia PureView 808, the One X, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and a Nokia Lumia 920 prototype. The two Nokia phones were best in low light, courtesy of PureView. The PureView 808 uses an oversampling technique that captures hi-res images and then condenses them into lower MP values, but still keeps clarity and detail. The Nokia cameras also have optical image stabilisation.

The iPhone 5 is the runner up to the Nokia Lumia duo, as its low light pics were only a shade or so darker, and only slightly less detailed. This is nothing of a surprise, though, as its sensors are smaller. The iPhone 5 camera beat both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X – the One X in particular proved to be very muddy and grainy in low light.

If you need a decent all-condition camera, then you should go for the Nokia Lumia 920 or the 808. If you’re a bit less exacting, then the iPhone 5 might suit you as well. There’s nothing wrong with the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the One X, though, as they perform quite well.
