Untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak For iPod Touch & iPhone (Status Update)

By  |

Jailbreaking fans are waiting for the iOS 6 solution. They also want to know how they can install Cydia onto their iPhones 4S and 5, as well as the iPod Touch 5G. So where is this jailbreak? Should we just get over it and install iOS 6.0.1 already? This is what we know so far.

Update on iOS 6 untethered jailbreak for iPhone & iPod touch devices

iPhone Dev reams are trying to find exploits in the firmware, and have made some progress, but only for the iPhones 3GS and 4, and the iPod Touch 4G. Owners can get the iOS 6 jailbreak from Redsn0w – install it into your computer, plug your device in and follow instructions.

iPhone 4 owners will just have to stick with iOS 5 if they want the jailbreak. If you’ve got the iPhone 5, you’re stuck with iOS 6. Absinthe for the iPhone 4S on iOS 5 came out a few months ago, and there’s also a tethered jailbreak for the iPhones 3GS and 4 and the iPod Touch 4G. However, if your phone runs out of battery or you have to reboot, you’ll have to jailbreak it all over again. There is no immediate prospect of an iOS 6 jailbreak, though.

iOS 6 has scoobied the devs. If you have a 4S and are sick of waiting you could revert to iOS 5, but iPhone 5 owners are just stuck. Developers could be waiting for Apple to bring iOS 6.1 out before they get the jailbreak out. If, of course, they even have it…. If they do have it, we need to hope that Apple hasn’t closed the exploits already. The Beta 2 version of 6.1 is already out, and if you have a dev account you can take a look at it. iOS 6.1 will have some bug fixes, so you should be pretty happy with it. It’s looking like it’ll be 2013 before we see an untethered iPhone 5 jailbreak, then, as this is when Apple’s expected to release the official iOS 6.1 update. We reckon you should bump up to iOS 6.0.1, as we don’t think the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak is due soon.
