Redsn0w iOS 6 Jailbreak Guide: iPhone & iPod Touch Only

By  |

Only a few weeks after the third beta of Apple’s iOS 6 was out, Apple offered the beta 4 of iOS 6.1 to any devs registered with them. If you fancy a go at cracking the beta, this is a bonus, as there’s a tethered jailbreak for iOS beta 4 – Redsn0w 0.9.15b3.

Redsn0w iOS 6 jailbreak guide (iPhone & iPod touch only)

You can get this beta 4 build 10B5126b as a delta update or download it from the Apple portal for all iOS devices, like the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod Touch. If you’re using a beta of iOS 6.1 you can get the beta 4 from General>Software updates in Settings.

The update is around 56.5MB in size, and the total update is 896MB. Apple revealed a beta 3 for Apple TV software, and this comes with the Xcode Developer Preview too.

There’s a jailbreak for the iOS 6.1 beta 4 from Redsn0w 0.9.15b3. This is tethered though, and doesn’t work if you don’t have the A5 chip, so you’ll need the iPhones 3GS, the 4 and the iPod Touch 4. These gadgets all have the Limera1n exploit. If you have the iPhones 4S or 5, or the iPads 2, 3 and 4, or the iPod Touch 5 or iPad Mini, it won’t work.

This tutorial is for devs only:

Download and install beta 4 on your phone or tablet. You should have iOS 6 on your computer already. If you don’t, the download it before you start. Download Redsn0w 0.9.15b3.

Connect your device to your PC and put it into DFU mode. Open Redsn0w 0.9.15b3, and wait for the computer to recognise your device. Click Extras, select IPSW, then head to the iOS 6 firmware file. Redsn0w will hopefully identify the firmware.

Head to the main page of Redsn0w and click Jailbreak. Wait for the process to finish then make sure that Cydia has a check mark. Click Next and the JB process will start. Once this is done your device will return to the Lock Screen. Return your device to the DFU mode.

Head back to the main page of Redsn0w and click on Extras, select IPSW, and then iOS 6.0 firmware. Redsn0w should pick up the firmware. Click on Boot tethered and the tethered boot-up will happen. When you see the pineapple logo, you’ll know the boot-up is complete.

When the tethered boot has happened, you’ll be at the lock screen. Unlock and swipe to the second page, where you’ll see the Cydia app icon. Open up and let it run though its initial configuration and set-up.

Now you should have a jailbroken iOS 6 iPhone or iPod touch device.
