iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Can Apple Defeat The Korean Giant?

By  |

The iPhone 5 is just around the corner and everyone is wondering what Apple will deliver. Recently the Samsung Galaxy S3 was crowned the top selling smartphone, taking the place of the iPhone 4S. So will Apple be able to deliver with their new iPhone 5 and regain the crown?

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: quick look

Apple will reveal the iPhone 5 on 12th September so we don’t have long to wait. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is already out and since its release in May it has sold more than 10 million units. This means it is the fastest ever selling device of Samsung’s.

The iPhone 5 is rumored to come with a body that will be 7.6mm thick and if this is true it would be 1mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S3. It is thought that the new iPhone 5 will have the same industrial look of the previous model, the 4S, but with some minor changes in materials used. Chances are that the screen will be higher quality than that of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the S3 has a somewhat plastic feel to it. It is thought that the display of the iPhone 5 will be 4 inches, while the one on the S3 is 4.8 inches. The 4 inch screen may be in the resolution of 16:9 and this would mean that the device would have to be taller while remaining the same width. This could cause a problem with app up scaling which could result in black bars showing top and bottom on the iPhone’s screen.

At the moment there is no news on the processor of the new iPhone 5 and many believe that it won’t be able to match the Samsung Galaxy S3 with its quad core Exynos 1.4GHz processor.

One of the biggest changes with the iPhone 5 will be with the dock connector, if rumors prove true. On the down side this means that old accessories will not work with the new phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with support for SD card and the iPhone 5 will not. However the iPhone will use cloud storage. The S3 also has support for outputting HD content to the TV through the HDMI cable.

The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is an 8 megapixel with zero shutter lag and many features while rumors have been going around that the camera on the iPhone 5 will be 3D and will have a multi-focus sensor. It is thought that it too will be 8 megapixels.

The battery of the iPhone 5 may be larger than on previous models but it will not be able to beat the large battery of the Samsung Galaxy S3 (2,100mAh versus 1,440mAh).

At the moment choosing between the two handsets would be impossible. But with the iPhone 5 just around the corner we won’t have long to wait to feast our eyes on the next generation iPhone from Apple and make our minds up whether to go for it or the Samsung Galaxy S3.
