Apple’s basking in the warm limelight right now, with its iPhone 5, but its latest darling will soon be pitted against a slew of new competitors.

One of the favourites out there is the upcoming Verizon DROID RAZR Maxx HD. The “Google-owned” phone has a 4.7-inch almost edge-to-edge screen and a huuuuuuuge battery, and it looks like it’s going to be a bit of a star. With this in mind, how will the iPhone 5 stand up to it? Take a shuftie at the specs table at the bottom.

What these figures mean: The Motorola DROID RAZR Maxx HD and the iPhone 5 have lots in common, but there are very telling differences. They run different operating systems for a start, and the Maxx HD has a much bigger screen. It also has a different screen tech to the iPhone – AMOLED. AMOLED has pros and cons – it gives vibrant colors and deep blacks, but can seem artificial compared to the iPhone’s LCD screen, which displays bright whites much better.

The Motorola DROID RAZR Maxx HD battery life is way better than the iPhone 5, and it has a microSD option. Unless you’re with Verizon, though, the RAZR isn’t on your radar. If you’re after the iPhone 5, then you have the choice of Sprint, AT&T and Verizon in the US.

The Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD chases down the iPhone 5 in many points – it is light, very thin and makes use of premium materials for its exterior design, in this case Kevlar. The DROID RAZR MAXX HD is expected to hit stores before the holidays.
