iPhone 5 vs LG Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S3: Age Is Just A Number

By  |

In May of last year Samsung revealed what went on to become the best-selling handset of 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S3. Apple then launched the Apple iPhone 5 in September and this was followed up with the release of the LG Nexus 4 in November, which makes it the baby of the bunch. So does age matter and how does the elder Samsung Galaxy S3 compare to the two newer devices?

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs new kids: LG Nexus 4 & iPhone 5

Processor: The LG Nexus 4 is packed with the 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor, while the Apple iPhone 5 comes with the 1.2GHz A6 processor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos processor internationally and the dual core in the US. This puts the Apple iPhone 5 as the slowest of the handsets on paper, but Apple have made it known that it is twice as fast as the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 comes with four cores and 2GB of RAM, which means it has the best of both when compared with the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has 1GB of RAM with its four cores and 2GB of RAM with the dual core. This means that the LG Nexus 4 is ahead and is the winner.

Software: If you want pure Android then you would have to go for the LG Nexus 4 with Jelly Bean 4.2, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been updated to Jelly Bean 4.1 and the Apple iPhone 5 comes with the latest iOS 6 from Apple. iOS is the most streamlined, but Android is the most customisable. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 both have Android, however the LG Nexus 4 is the one that will be updated first as it has the Nexus name. The OS is a matter of personal preference and so it has to be a draw between the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

Space: When it comes to storage you can get the LG Nexus 4 in 8GB or 16GB but there is no support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with 16GB or 32GB and you can add on another 64GB via SD card. The Apple iPhone 5 is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, but lacks SD card support. The winner is the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Screen: The LG Nexus 4 offers a display of 4.7 inches in True HD IPS with 318ppi and a resolution of 1280 x 768. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has 306ppi and resolution of 1280 x 720 with a 4.8 inch screen. The smallest of the displays is that of the Apple iPhone 5 at 4 inches, with 206ppi and a resolution of 1136 x 640. Which is the better of the displays is down to personal choice, but the IPS display offers colours that tend to be more realistic and the Super AMOLED displays are over saturated and then hyper real, but they have deep blacks and vibrant colours. The LG Nexus comes with the largest of the IPS displays, which makes it the winner.

Life: You may be able to get up to 15 hours of talk time from the LG Nexus 4 as it comes with a battery of 2100mAh. The Samsung Galaxy S3 along with the Apple iPhone 5 both offer around eight hours of battery life. However recently in tests AnandTech said that the Apple iPhone 5 battery was the best, while they put the Samsung Galaxy S3 in second place and the LG Nexus trailed behind. The Apple iPhone 5 therefore has to be the winner.

Exterior: The LG Nexus 4 comes with measurements of 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm and is 129 grams in weight. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and measures 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 comes in at 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm and has a weight of 112 grams. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the best looks out of the three handsets, but the LG Nexus 4 is not all that far behind it, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is in last place. As the Apple iPhone 5 happens to be the smallest of the devices, along with being the lightest, it is the winner.

Connectivity: The LG Nexus 4 along with the Samsung Galaxy S3 has NFC, while if you want LTE you have choices of the Apple iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. If it is both that you want then you have to consider the Samsung Galaxy S3 as this is the only handset of the three to support both.

Camera: When it comes down to the cameras there is an 8 megapixel camera on all three handsets on the back. They support such as LED flash, video at 1080p and autofocus. The LG Nexus 4 offer a 1.8 camera on the front, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the 1.9, while the Apple iPhone 5 comes with a 1.2 on the front. The best camera in low light is the Apple iPhone 5, but all cameras come with their good and bad points. You have Photo Sphere on the LG Nexus 4, the Apple iPhone 5 has the best BSI sensor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 excels when it comes to photo and video at the same time.

Verdict: If you are looking for a device that is easy to use and has looks that are great then you may choose the Apple iPhone 5. On the other hand if you take price into account then the LG Nexus 4 is good value as while it doesn’t offer everything, its price tag is very low.. If you are looking for a device that is feature packed and an all-rounder then you could choose the Samsung Galaxy S3, as it has a fair price tag and it does come with a lot of features with almost no sacrifices. Thanks to this the aging device comes out on the top and is our winner.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, PC, iPhone and Android games keep Berke busy at work all day. Honestly though we’re not sure why we’re paying him as it should be the other way around.
