Is iPhone 5 Hype Over?

By  |

There was a recent article on CNN that said shoppers over the holidays shouldn’t worry about not being able to get their hands on the iPhone 5 as Apple have lots of the iPhone stock in stores. So does this mean that you could potentially walk into the Apple Store and pick up the iPhone 5 today?

iPhone 5 easy availability so early raises questions

Fans of the iPhone, along with anyone wanting one will find this exciting of course. However from another point of view you have to ask yourself why the device is all of a sudden available in great supplies in Apple Stores especially given that it was released in 56 additional countries just 2 weeks ago. Could it be that the hype behind the device and demand for it has passed? Or is there something much bigger happening here?

When Apple released the iPhone 5, AT&T dropped the asking price for the iPhone 3GS down to just 99 cents with a two year contract. Of course this encouraged people to get the device. The problem with this is that people were not buying the new iPhone 5. Now if you multiply this with all the deals being offered for the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S you can now see a different iPhone market competing against the latest edition to the iPhone family.

The iPhone 5 sold more than 5 million units during the first weekend that it went on sale. This topped all weekend release sales of other iPhones. However the demand decreased when all other models of the iPhone saw price reductions, especially as you could get an iPhone from as low as 99 cents.

No one can say for sure if the hype behind the iPhone 5 is falling. However one thing is known and that is that the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the 4S have all had a part to play in the demand of the iPhone 5. It could be thanks to them that there are plenty of iPhone 5 units to go around.

Another interesting point to note is that supply checks for November showed that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 4S are still leading ahead of the iPhone 5. Furthermore, Samsung reported that 4 of its 5 best sales weeks for the Galaxy S3 happened to have occured right after the iPhone 5 launched.
