When Apple revealed the iPhone 5 with iOS 6 hackers into jailbreaking iPhones had to start all over again to find exploits in the OS that would let them jailbreak the device.

iPhone 5 & iOS 6 untethered jailbreak progress

Recently a photo of what appears to be an iPhone 5 that has been jailbroken has appeared online and news of it spread like fire claims CultOfMac. Apparently developers are working on a jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and they are in fact making decent progress.

There is a small but elite group working on cracking the latest OS of Apple and who will then share the jailbreak with the millions of fans waiting for it. Many want to be the first to say they have jailbroken iPhone 5 and iOS 6 and they see it as nothing more than a challenge.

The iPhone 5 is one of the biggest challenges that hackers have come up against. All of the exploits which hackers used to jailbreak the iPhone have been closed by Apple. Now making a jailbreak for the iPhone is similar to undertaking a jigsaw puzzle of intricacy or conducting a symphony that is complicated.

However it appears that the pieces of the puzzle are indeed coming together. At the JailbreakCon in September things were said to be grim, however today they look a great deal more promising.

PlanetBeing, a Chronic Dev member is said to be working hard on the jailbreak and just yesterday he posted a photo of the iPhone 5 running a jailbreak tweak. He said that at the moment he wasn’t going to say much and some crucial pieces were still missing from the puzzle and this meant that the jailbreak wasn’t ready for release. He said while they would like nothing better than to release it, the structural integrity had to be ensured before it was ready.

The developer went on to say that it was now about finding the missing pieces of the puzzle more than it was about debugging. One of the messiest parts of the whole process was installing the jailbreak onto the iPhone 5.. While the jailbreak is stable, there are exploits missing and he couldn’t say just what these were.

He would not give a timeframe for a release, but jailbreaks in the past have come out around December. He was asked about the status for the jailbreak being “grim” looking, however he said it wasn’t at all.

So cheer up all those who are waiting for the jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6, you might get it in your Christmas stocking, keep your fingers crossed.
