Why Does The iPhone 5 Rattle Like An Old Tin Can?

By  |

If you’ve upgrade from an iPhone 4 or 4S to the iPhone 5, one of the things you will notice is that the latest iPhone looks more refined. It is taller, lighter and sleeker. However what doesn’t match its new design is its harsher vibrations.

iPhone 5 vs 4S: vibration observations

Apparently what has happened is that Apple have stuck the vibration motor from the original iPhone from back in 2005 in the new iPhone 5. This vibrates much more violently than the one in the iPhone 4S and the 4. So why did Apple stick a “less refined” motor in its new flagship?

According to an iFixit teardown, it had to do with space constraints. Because the iPhone 5 is significantly thinner than the iPhone 4S, Apple didn’t have space to put the larger 4S vibration motor in it. So it got stuck with the older one.

Of course this is no reason to look down at the iPhone 5. But the difference is obvious to those who have upgrade from an iPhone 4 or 4S. It also feels more harsher than the Samsung Galaxy S3 and One X, the latter which has a prominent “whirr.”
