iPhone 4S vs New HTC Proto: Old Is Gold

By  |

We recently asked how the iPhone 4S matches up against the upcoming HTC Proto a.k.a Desire X. The iPhone 4S is one of the best devices in the world of smartphones thanks to effective software and a simple form factor. However technology is getting better so how does it match up to some of the newer handsets on the market?

iPhone 4S vs HTC Proto / Desire X

To show just how far technology has moved on from the time the 4S was launched, the iPhone has been put up against the Proto, which is one of the middle of the range handsets coming from HTC. But will the iPhone be able to take on the cheaper and newer handset?

The iPhone has the A5 chip of Apple which is based on the dual core A9 Cortex chip with 1GHz and GPU in the form of PowerVRSGX543MP2. It has 512MB of RAM and is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of storage. However it doesn’t have support for SD card storage. The handset does run well thanks to superb software and as such it is perfect for playing games and listening to music, with no lag.

The HTC Proto comes with the Qualcomm S4 dual core chip and it has the Adreno 203 GPU so it is more than capable of dealing with media tasks and gaming. It will have 768MB of RAM which is below that expected from a handset released in today’s market. On saying this it could have more than enough to be able to beat the iPhone 4S. It comes with a measly 4GB of storage on-board but it does have support for SD card which lets you slap in another 32GB.

Both of the handsets are matched well against the other so they are at a draw so far.

The screen of the iPhone 4S lets it down a little at just 3.5 inches but it is a marvel thanks to the fact that is has 330 ppi and is 640×960. It is responsive and it does give sharp pictures and offer great color reproduction.

The HTC Proto has a 4 inch display at 480 x 800 with 233 ppi which is very disappointing for a handset in the middle of the range from HTC. At the moment there is no indication of how well the screen will perform so the winner here has to be the iPhone 4S.

The Desire X should have a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, geo-tagging and LED flash and it should be a good camera as HTC are the masters of cheap cameras. There is no indication of the device having a second camera.

The camera on the iPhone 4S is an 8 megapixel and it comes with 1080p video capture complete with LED flash, autofocus and face detection. There is also a front VGA camera which is used for FaceTime. The winner here is the iPhone 4S.

Software wise the iPhone has the iOS which is very easy to use but not very flexible and it lacks customization. There are a lot of apps available which is a huge bonus. The Desire X runs on ICS Android 4.0 and it is very sleek. There is a lot of customisation available and there are many apps available in the Google Play Store. The OS also has the Sense user interface which makes for great eye candy.

The winner here has to be a draw as both of the operating systems are great in their own way.

In terms of looks the iPhone 4S is the better of the two handsets and it has durability. While the HTC Proto is not the ugliest of handsets its look may not be for everyone, but it does have class. The winner is the iPhone 4S.

The overall winner has to be the iPhone 4S and this may not be a surprise to many, after all millions of users have chosen it as their preferred handset. So the iPhone 4S may be the better option despite its age.
