iPad Mini vs Galaxy Note 2: [Spoiler: David Kills Goliath]

By  |

When the iPad Mini was revealed by Apple, people began to compare it to other small tablets on the market. Apple have a great record when it comes to tablets, however the iPad Mini not only has to compete with other tablets, but also the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 given their dimensions are just a few inches off. So how does it compare to something smaller? Let’s find out.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs iPad Mini: size doesn’t matter

The iPad Mini from Apple comes with the A5 dual-core processor and this is ok when it comes to playing games, thanks to the PowerVR GPU coupled with 1GB of RAM. The tablet is available in either black or white and you can choose between 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on the other hand packs a quad-core processor and 2GB RAM plus the added option of expandable storage. This means that it has the faster chip, more amount of RAM and it has more maximum storage than what you can get with the iPad Mini.

The iPad Mini comes with iOS 6, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has Android Jelly Bean 4.1. The App Store is available to the iPad Mini and it has many apps that have been optimised for the tablet. the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 doesn’t offer this luxury through the Google Play Store. In fact the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 doesn’t use apps optimized for tablets, so the iPad Mini has to be declared the winner here given we’re looking at it from a tablet standpoint.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has a display of 5.5 inches and it has 306ppi, which is higher than that of the iPad Mini. The Mini does make up for this however as it has more screen real estate and its IPS LCD looks great in sunlight and it has colours that are more realistic than the AMOLED Note 2. In this case it seems that size matters, however it has to be a draw as both displays have pros and cons. Some will choose the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 thanks to its blacks that are deep, colours which are very vibrant and sharper resolution. Of course if the iPad Mini had a Retina Display, it would be a straight victory for the Apple tablet instead of a draw.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 comes with a camera of 8 megapixel on the back and it has a camera of 1.9 megapixel on the front. The iPad Mini comes with the 5 megapixel iSight camera and it has a 2 megapixel one on the front. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 wins here as it takes the best photos and it is the easiest to handle when you want to get a perfect picture thanks to its smaller dimensions.

When it comes to price the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will cost you at least $600 if you don’t want a contract. The iPad Mini on the other hand begins at $329 only.

Conclusion: The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is the winner here when it comes to camera, hardware and the amount of storage space. The iPad Mini takes it for apps choice and price. So the Note 2 has the slight advantage in this comparison. Of course you also have to weigh in the other “phone” advantages of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as well such as calling capabilities, NFC and GPS. But then again, being a strictly tablet comparison, we have to leave that aside.
