IIHS Test Not Helping Pedestrian Detection System

There were already talks about the pedestrian detection system that so many vehicles come with right now might not be the most reliable and the latest test is done by IIHS seems to confirm that even more.

Even with all the new tech that new models are getting fitted with, it was estimated that 6283 people on foot were killed by vehicles in 2018. The Pedestrian Detection system on vehicles was supposed to stop the vehicles when it detects and obstacle in its path using cameras, radar sensors, and the automatic emergency braking system.

According to IIHS, not all systems work the same and that of the 19 models that were tested, 13 of them did avoid the pedestrian but the rest failed. Models that did well included the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Nissan Maxima and a few more while the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and Chevrolet Malibu failed to stop or reduce its speed when there was somebody in the way.

So just because your vehicle has the tech does not mean you don’t need to pay attention anymore.
