HTC DROID DNA vs iPhone 5: Mass vs Class

By  |

Comparing these two devices may seem a little odd given that their sizes are on the opposite end of the scale and the devices likely target different buyers. Nevertheless the HTC DROID DNA will be going head to head with the iPhone 5 later this month so let’s get to it!

HTC DROID DNA vs iPhone 5

The HTC Droid DNA is 141 x 70.5 x 9.7 mm at 138g, while the iPhone 5 is 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm at 112g. So the iPhone 5 is the smaller and lighter of the two handsets.

While the iPhone 5 has better dimensions, this means that the HTC Droid DNA offers 50% more display than the iPhone with its 4 inches compared to the 5 inches on the Droid DNA. The Droid DNA has 440ppi too which means it beats the Retina Display on the iPhone 5: the resolution of the Droid DNA is 1080 x 1920 pixels and the iPhone 5 is 1136 x 640.

You can get the HTC Droid DNA with a two year contract for $199 and 16GB of internal storage. The iPhone 5 is available in 16GB too and up to 64GB if you have money to spend. While you could get more storage options with the iPhone 5, you only get half the amount of RAM – 1GB versus 2GB RAM in the DNA.

The HTC Droid DNA comes with the 1.5GHz Snapdragon Pro which is quad core, while the iPhone 5 sits on a 1.2 GHz dual-core setup.

The 8 megapixel camera of the iPhone 5 is good, however so is the 8 megapixel camera of the HTC DROID DNA. The iPhones front camera loses out over the DNA’s as the iPhone 5 has a 1.2 megapixel camera at 720p and 30 fps and the Droid has an 88 degree wide angle camera of 1.2 megapixels at 1080p and 30fps. On the rear though the nothing beats the low-light performance of the iPhone 5 other than the Nokia Lumia 920 so far.

The batteryon the iPhone 5 is 1440mAh while the HTC Droid DNA comes with a bigger battery of 2020mAh. The DNA also comes with wireless charging built in and supports NFC.

The HTC DROID DNA runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean while the iPhone 5 has iOS 6.0.1.

So overall we have two very different devices. The iPhone 5 has its ultra-light and small dimensions coupled with its beautiful industrial design and excellent camera. The HTC DROID DNA goes with the “bigger is better” thinking and while has larger dimensions, offers a bigger display with more ppi, bigger battery, more RAM and more cores (quad-core vs dual). It also has some extras like NFC and Beats Audio. You can’t go wrong with either really and it all may come down to OS preference when deciding – iOS or Android.
