Nexus 7 vs iPad Mini: Lightweight Favorites

If you are on the search for a new small tablet then you could be trying to decide between the Google Nexus 7 and the Apple iPad Mini. Both of the tablets are great and in the end you might have to choose based on whether you want Android or iOS. Of course you would also have to take into account the display, the battery life and above all else the cost.

You could look at the Apple iPad Mini 16GB version. This would cost you $329 and the device is more portable than carrying around the iPad 4 with retina display. The Google Nexus 7 comes with plenty of customisation and it has a cost of $199 if you want the Wi-Fi option. This means it is cheaper than the Apple iPad Mini. Both have sharp displays and are fast, but which one should you go for?

Apple are the leaders when it comes to the design and so the iPad Mini does win, however the Google Nexus 7 is also good looking and it does come with a plastic back that is soft to the touch.

The Google Nexus 7 should be in front when it comes to the display as it does have higher ppi. However it is let down by the fact that Google and Asus cut corners and this means that the calibration of the display is off. The colours are not as good either, even with the device having 216ppi. The Apple iPad Mini comes with 163ppi. Text is better on the display of the Apple iPad Mini and it looks sharper, with the contrast and colours being clearer. Video and photos look better on the display as it is the larger of the two screens.

When it comes to price the Nexus 7 is the best choice and the only other tablets that come into the price tag are the Kindle Fire HD and the Nook HD. Google does like to keep their prices down as this attracts more buyers. Apple on the other hand is all about quality and design. The Apple iPad employees are known for delivering superb software and great designs. However the Nexus 7 is cheaper by around $129. You can get the 3G Nexus 7 for $299, while the Apple iPad Mini LTE version will cost you about $459. This of course is a big difference.

When it comes to the OS you would have to choose between iOS and Android 4.1. The Google Nexus 7 has Project Butter and this means that apps do run very smooth. However when the tablet got Android 4.2 this slowed it down.

The Nexus 7 has plenty of options for customisation. This includes shortcuts for apps, home screens and owners are even able to add on custom ROMs. With iOS you do not get any of these options.

When it comes down to hardware the Nexus 7 has the quad core 1.7GHz chip and the Apple iPad Mini has the A5 dual core processor, which is the same as in the iPad 2. When Geekbench tested the devices they found that the Nexus 7 comes with twice the speed of the Apple iPad Mini, however the A5 offers plenty of power for iOS. It also has a GPU that is considered to be world class. When it comes to the processor it has to be the Nexus 7, however for the GPU it is the Apple iPad Mini that leads.

Of course tablets rely on apps and this is where the Apple iPad Mini leads. It comes with plenty of apps which have been optimised for tablets, far more than what you would see in the Google Play Store. This means that you would have to choose over apps or software.

Both tablets come with batteries that are great and you should be able to get around 8.5 hours from the Nexus 7 and around 10 hours from the Apple iPad Mini. This means that the Apple iPad Mini comes out ahead.

Both of the tablets are very much the same in regards to specs and so you would have to choose based on the OS, the cost of the tablet and whether you needed LTE.
