At one of in time, Ford had close to 30 global architectures to offer but it was later reduced down to nine. Now, Ford is looking to further reduce that number to five. According to Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s Head of product development and purchasing, the move will help save Ford from bankruptcy and also boost the efficiency of Ford’s supply base.

The five platforms that Ford will be keeping includes the rear-wheel driver/all-wheel drive body-on-frame platform, a front-wheel-drive/AWD unibody, a commercial van unibody, an RWD/AWD unibody and a unibody platform for Ford.

The move could also helo Ford save on engineering and product-development cost.
