Customers who are with AT&T and have been grandfathered into the unlimited 3G data plan can now keep it if they upgrade to an iPhone 5 reports BGR. However bear in mind that while AT&T is making this exception, the iPhone 5 is compatible with 4G LTE as well.

AT&T: iPhone 5 would-be upgraders can keep unlimited data plan

AT&T said today that they would be offering their customers the option to keep their data plan if they decide to buy a new iPhone 5. A spokesman said that this would apply to their unlimited plans as well.

AT&T said that that were taking orders for the iPhone 5 starting from 14th September and the handset would be shipping on the 21st September. The 16GB iPhone 5 is $199.99, the 32GB $299.99 and the 64GB $399.99.

They went on to say that they were thrilled to be offering the iPhone 5 to consumers and that the handset is thinner and lighter than any other iPhone and now has a 4 inch Retina display and a new A6 chip for faster performance.

Verizon Wireless unfortunately hasn’t issued any such statements regarding the iPhone 5 and their unlimited data plan holders.
