ASUS Padfone 2 vs iPhone 5: Hybrid Android Crushes Apple

By  |

The iPhone 5 has been with us for a few weeks now and despite having its flaws, it seems to be a roaring success. However soon it will have some competition in the shape of the Asus Padfone 2, which will be released in Taiwan next week along with parts of Europe before the end of 2012. So how will the Padfone 2 match up against the iPhone 5?

ASUS Padfone 2 vs iPhone 5

Some people may not have heard about the Padfone. It is a hybrid device that slots into the back of a tablet to provide users with not only a phone but a tablet too. Asus have now gone on to reveal the latest model and we have the specs of the phone, which we will match against the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 comes with an A6 dual core processor offering 1.3GHz and PowerVR SGX543MP3 GPU. The Padfone on the other hand has the Krait 1.5GHz A4 Pro quad core and Adreno 320 graphics.

The display of the iPhone is 4 inches LCD Retina with a resolution of 1126 x 640 and 326ppi. The Padfone 2 comes with a 4.7 inch display which is Super IPS+ with 312ppi and a resolution of 1280 x 720.

The iPhone 5 comes with 1GB of RAM and is in a choice of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and doesn’t offer support for SD card. The Asus Padfone 2 has 2GB of RAM and 50GB of Asus web storage for 2 years.

The camera on the iPhone 5 is 8 megapixels and it comes with LED flash, autofocus and touch to focus, along with image stabilisation and face detection, geo tagging and a panorama mode. The ASUS Padfone 2 offers a 13 megapixel camera that has digital zoom, geo tagging, autofocus, burst mode and LED flash. It can take 1080p video.

For connectivity the iPhone 5 has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB and Lightning connector, along with USB 2.0. The Padfone comes with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2 and 3.5 mm headphone connector.

The iPhone 5 has the latest iOS 6 operating system and the Padfone 2 comes with Android 4.0 ICS. It should get an update to Jelly Bean soon.

The iPhone 5 has a larger display than the previous iPhone and it is thinner, it measures 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm and has a weight of 122grams, with a non-removable battery of 1440mAh. The Padfone 2 is 135 grams and 137.9mm x 68.9mm x 9mm.

All in all the ASUS Padfone 2 comes with the better processor and has the removable battery, which is larger than that of the iPhone 5. It also beats the iPhone 5 out on storage, camera (if you believe more MPs are better) and screen size. The iPhone is the slimmer of the two and it has the latest OS out of the box. So the Padfone 2 seems to be the clear winner, on paper at least. But keeping in mind that specs aren’t everything, make sure you try out both devices before splurging on either. Your preference may finally come down to which OS you are comfortable with.
