2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid: Can’t Let Prius Have All The Fun

By  |

The 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid isn’t about to let the Toyota Prius have all the fun as the chief engineer of Toyota has said that the Camry Hybrid will come with two choices of battery options and three powertrains, just like the Prius.

The choices of engine for the 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid include the 2.5 litre 4 cylinder, the V6 3.5 litre and a new gen Camry Hybrid. The 2.5 litre will work alongside the Toyota Hybrid System II, which is the follow up to the Hybrid Synergy Drive that has been used since the 2004 version of the Toyota Prius.

The 2018 Toyota Camry also shares the Toyota New Generation Architecture of the 2016 Toyota Prius Hybrid. The battery pack is now found under the rear seat as opposed to being under the trunk floor.

The Prius offers up two different batteries, one being the nickel-metal-hydride. Higher versions offer up the lithium-ion pack, which is lighter and smaller. The 2018 Toyota Camry is also going to offer up two battery packs. The lithium-ion is going to be used in the XLE and XSE trims, the more luxurious ones, along with the model offering the best fuel economy. The entry level version will offer up the nickel-metal-hydride pack.

At the moment we don’t know what ratings the 2018 Toyota Camry is going to offer up. The Camry Hybrid at the moment offers 42 in the city, 38 on the highway and a combination of 40.

Just a thought; if the Lithium Ion is lighter and smaller, make it the same size as the nickel-metal-hydride and reprogram the software for more battery assist for even better fuel economy numbers and performance.
