By  |

When comparing the 2018 Lexus LS, BMW 740i and the Mercedes-Benz S550, the Lexus is the underdog. However you shouldn’t rule it out before taking a good look at how the three compare in regards to technology, design, luxury features and the power and output.

The Lexus LS has just been introduced to us at the Detroit Auto Show and it is going up against the Mercedes-Benz S550 and the BMW 740i. We have only seen the one model up to now

The Lexus LS offers up the V6 3.5 litre engine and this is the biturbocharged offering up 415 horses along with 442 torque. It offers the 10 speed auto transmission and rear-wheel drive and can reach 60mph in 4.5 seconds. There are also all-wheel drive versions available.

The Mercedes-Benz S550 has the V8 4.7 litre biturbocharged engine and this gives up 449 horses and 516 torque and it comes with the 9 speed automatic transmission and can reach 60mph in 4.8 seconds.

The BMW 740i is offered with the 3 litre turbocharged V6 engine offering 332 horses and 332 torque. It has the 8 speed automatic and it can reach 60mph in 5.4 seconds.

The 2018 Lexus LS is packed with technology and luxury and it comes with aluminium and wood trims, surround sound audio, heated massage seats in the back, air suspension and a display of 12.3 inch and 23 inch head up display. For safety it offers pedestrian detection, pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and auto high beams.

The Mercedes-Benz S550 competes very well for luxury as you might expect it to and along with it offering heated seats it also offers heated armrests. The BMW 740i has a system that stops the vehicle from changing lanes if there happens to be another vehicle in the blindspot. Both vehicles offer up semi-autonomous driving on the highway.

The Lexus LS has received a great update and its design now has a huge spindle grille, the remainder of the styling cues are subtle and subdued. The surfaces do flow gently and there are very few dramatic creases.

The BMW 7 40i hasn’t changed much from the version that came before it and on the sides it still has that hockey stick like design. The Mercedes-Benz offers up lots of curves and there are many sharp lines on it, which offer character.

So perhaps the Lexus LS shouldn’t really be the underdog as it does have a great deal to offer when competing against the BMW 740i and the Mercedes-Benz S550.
