The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt hasn’t been doing too well in sales recently and it sold less units that the competition, including the Volt, Leaf and the Prius Prime last month.
Electric cars are the in-thing in the US right now as many drivers favour the plug-in hybrids. Tesla has been selling in impressive numbers but then you cannot really put the vehicles in the same class as others due to the price tag.
The Chevrolet Volt came out at the top of the sales charts in the US and this was followed by the Toyota Prius Prime. Meanwhile sales of the Chevrolet Bolt fell even lower during February than they had been in January. Sales of the Prius Prime, Volt, Tesla Model S and others had strong gains during February.
Sales of electric vehicles were up 55% compared to the same period last February and on average sales are up 62%. A lot of the vehicles on the chart are compliance vehicles that are only offered in California and just a few other states. However during 2017 we expect to see some new models that are going to have a price tag that will appeal to mainstream shopers.
The Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq plug-in, Kia Niro and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid all fall into this category. Once we get vehicles with price tags that aren’t out of the reach of most people and which are high quality and offer emission free driving, the electric vehicle market could really take off. At the moment EV sales in the US are around 300,000.
The sales of the BMW i3 and Chevrolet Bolt have been disappointing in the US, but it’s a different story in the market in Europe. Perhaps plug-ins will overtake electrics in the mainstream market this year, but we will have to wait to find out.
