With more and more electric vehicles coming out offering a range in excess of 300 miles, Toyota realises that the Toyota Prius days are numbered as they are not going to be able to compete.
Now Toyota has revealed that they are setting up an in-house venture company that will give them a push to launch an electric vehicle. Toyota has been the leader with fuel cell technology and hybrids but just last week they said that the Toyota EV is going to be launched by 2020.
The in-house company is going to have staff from each of the four Toyota companies and they will be able to operate independently of management structures of Toyota, allowing them to work fast.
Toyota has come up with a new development and research team that will create an electric vehicle that will be able to offer a range of 300 kilometers. They plan to have the first vehicle out in 2020 in Japan. They are still dedicated to fuel cell vehicles and describe the Mirai as the ultimate in eco-cars, however they do realise that they do need to come up with a pure EV.
What will happen to the Toyota Prius when the all-electric vehicles begin to roll out is anyone’s guess, but we could be saying goodbye to it.
