A test for call quality was undertaken on Friday between the top three carriers in the US and Sprint came out on top for the Apple iPhone 5.
Sprint iPhone 5 beats AT&T and Verizon when it comes to call quality
CNET found out that there is a difference in call quality on the iPhone 5 on the top networks in the US. Of course the results could vary nationwide depending on your coverage and numerous other factors.
First a base call was made using an iPhone 4S on AT&T. CNET called San Francisco while standing outside on a busy street in New York and then compared recordings left on voicemail with the three carriers and their versions of the iPhone 5. All of the calls were made in the same way, with the reporter holding the device to their ear.
The voicemail recordings show that there is a difference in call quality between the iPhone 5 and the 4S, as the latter had some background noise and sound quality was a little mushy. The AT&T version of the iPhone 5 was closest to the iPhone 4S, although the noise cancelling feature of the handset was effective, some of the noise in the background did leak through on the call. The iPhone 5 on AT&T did have some graininess in the sound quality, and this was the one that sounded the most compressed.
When using the iPhone 5 on Verizon, CNET found that the quality was a little clearer and background noise was less than that of the AT&T version, however the was some popping and hissing noticeable when listening very carefully.
Sprint’s version on the other hand won clearly as the recording of the call had clarity and richness which was not heard with the other carriers. The transmission was very clear and there wasn’t any sign of hissing, popping or any other distortions with the iPhone 5.
