We recently got a glimpse of the Sony Xperia Z at CES 2013 as well as a good few minutes of hands on time. So how does it compare to the current champion of the Android realm, the Samsung Galaxy S3? Let’s find out.
Sony Xperia Z vs Samsung Galaxy S3
The Samsung Galaxy S3 was was revealed in May of 2012, while the Sony Xperia Z is said to be coming out in March. Despite the difference in age both of the handsets have a lot to offer.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core processor which is 1.4GHz, while in the US this is the 1.5GHz S4 dual core. The Sony Xperia Z on the other hand has the Qualcomm S4 Pro quad core processor and Adreno 320 GPU. Both of the devices are decent, however the Sony Xperia takes the edge with the newer chipset.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with the Super AMOLED display of 4.8 inches and has 306ppi and resolution of 1280 x 720. The Sony Xperia Z has the 5 inch display and ppi of 441 along with resolution of 1920 x 1080p. The display of the Samsung Galaxy S3 was impressive when it first came out, however the Sony Xperia Z has outclassed it with its full HD screen.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has 1GB of RAM, or 2GB in the US. It also comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage choices, with all being expandable by SD card up to 64GB. The Sony Xperia Z comes with 2GB of RAM and there is 16GB of storage, which expands to 32GB through microSD card. Therefore it has lesser overall storage.
The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 8 megapixels and it has support for autofocus, along with LED flash and captures video at 1080p. The front camera is 1.9 megapixel with recording at 720p. The back camera of the Sony Xperia Z is a whopping 13 megapixel and this too has 1080p video recording, LED flash. The camera on the front records in 1080p too. Both of the devices cameras have plenty of features, however it is the one on the Sony Xperia Z that wins, on paper at least.
The battery of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 2100mAh and this typically offers more than 11 hours of talk time on 3G. The Sony Xperia Z comes with a battery of 2330mAh, which provides around 14 hours of talk time.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has ICS and it can be updated to Jelly Bean 4.1.2, it also has the TouchWiz UI of Samsung. The Sony Xperia Z had Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and it will get Jelly Bean 4.2 upon release, it also has the Timescape UI.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and is 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm, while the Sony Xperia Z is 146 grams and measures 139mm x 71mm x 7.9mm.
You can get the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the UK, unlocked, for around £500, while in the US Amazon have it for about $540. The price tag of the Sony Xperia Z hasn’t been revealed, however rumour has it that it will be around £500 in the UK too.
This means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been a favourite for those who like Android handsets. However the specs along with features are somewhat outdated in comparison to the Sony Xperia Z, which is understandable as mobile tech moves very fast. Both of the devices have support for 4G LTE, along with NFC. The Sony Xperia Z is also water and dust resistant.
Both devices should not be sniffed at. And even though the Sony Xperia Z has yet to be released, the specs do beat those of the Samsung Galaxy S3. You also have to bear in mind that Samsung may be revealing the Samsung Galaxy S4 soon; however there is no confirmation of this happening. Should Samsung reveal it, then it is thought that it would be equal competition for the Sony Xperia Z.
So for now, we have to give the crown to the Sony Xperia Z.
