Sony Xperia Z vs iPhone 5: An Unbiased Review

Today we have chosen the Apple iPhone 5 and the Sony Xperia Z, and the specs of the two devices will speak for themselves.

The Apple iPhone 5 was launched back in September of 2012 and the handset was praised. The Sony Xperia X will be released this month, with the device gaining a lot of attention thanks to it being sleek and stylish.

The Apple iPhone 5 is available around the globe and it is offered by many carriers. The Sony Xperia Z will be launched in the UK first and then the rest of Europe, with Australia getting it this month. It should then roll out in March in Asia and it will be heading to the US at some point.

While all the specs and features cannot be compared. The key specs can be and this could help you if you are choosing between the two handsets. The Apple iPhone 5 runs iOS 6.1, while the Sony Xperia Z has Android. Your choice between the two could come down to whether you want an Android device or your prefer iOS. If you don’t care either way then you may care more about the specs.

The Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 1.2GHz dual core processor. The Sony Xperia Z has the quad core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor.

The Apple iPhone 5 has the famous retina display and it is 4 inches IPS LCD with resolution of 1136 x 640 and 326ppi. The Sony Xperia Z has the 5 inch TFT HD screen and this has the resolution of 1080 x 1920 full HD and 441ppi.

The Apple iPhone 5 comes with 1GB of RAM and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage, which is not expandable. The Sony Xperia Z meanwhile comes with 3GB of RAM and it has 16GB of storage which can be expanded by another 32GB.

The Apple iPhone 5 has the 8 megapixel camera which comes with autofocus, LED flash. HD image and video recording, geo-tagging, face detection, touch focus and HDR capability. It can capture 1080p videos, it has LED video, video stabilisation and it has a camera of 1.2 megapixels on the front. The Sony Xperia Z comes with a camera of 13.1 megapixels camera that supports LED flash, autofocus, face detection, geo-tagging, stabilisation, touch focus, panorama and HDR. Along with this is supports video capture at 1080p, autofocus, video light, stabiliser and HDR, it also comes with a camera of 2.2 megapixel on the front.

The 1400mAh battery of the Apple iPhone 5 isn’t removable, while the battery of the Sony Xperia X is 2330 mAh and this is also not removable.

The Apple iPhone 5 has iOS 6.1 while the Sony Xperia Z will have Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2, which will be updated to 4.2 and it has the Timescape UI.

The Apple iPhone 5 comes in at 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm x 7.6mm and it weighs just 112 grams. It is available in black with slate or white and silver. The Sony Xperia Z is 146 grams and it is 139 mm x 71 mm x 7.9mm. It comes in the choice of black, white or purple.

The price of the handsets will vary depending on the region, so we will offer prices from the US. The Apple iPhone 5 starts at $199 if you want the 16GB version. It costs £299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB model. These prices are with a contract of two years of course. If you want an unlocked Apple iPhone 5 you can expect to pay $649, $749 or $849 depending on the storage. At the moment there is no pricing for the Sony Xperia Z, however it is thought that it could be in the region of $199 on a contract of two years. The device may be in the region of $600 to $650 off contract.

Both of the devices are superb. If you are looking for a handset that is smaller and lighter you may wish to check out the Apple iPhone 5. The Sony Xperia Z takes the edge when it comes to the processor and on paper it does have the higher ppi and resolution. However a lot of people will tell you that there is more to a handset that this. The Sony Xperia Z has the biggest camera, however megapixels are not everything.

The Sony Xperia X is resistant to water and it does come dust resistant too. It has support for NFC, the Apple iPhone 5 doesn’t. Both of the devices are great looking handsets and their designs could be the deciding factor. Deciding between the two is not the easiest of choices, but the Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest to use and the Sony Xperia Z has the better multimedia options and it is better for customisation.
