Many people will choose their next handset based on the reputation and brand name of the company behind the device. This applies even more in regards to handsets such as the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 which have built a track record that speaks mountains about the device.
Samsung Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 6: future wars
This means that many people will have chosen between the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 already, even before the handsets have been released, and they might not have realised they have done this. Most owners of the iPhone and the Galaxy handsets will just upgrade inline to the latest model when their current contract is up. This tells us how close the devices have come in features, hardware and popularity.
While there is nothing to suggest that the next generation of devices will have the names of the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S4, that is the names that people have given them for the time being.
It is thought that Samsung may release the next generation in the Galaxy S4 at the MWC, which is on 25th February 2013, and the handset could be out in March or April. If this is so then we could have a wait of just 3 months.
Meanwhile Apple shocked many when they chose to release a new iPad, iPad 4, within months of releasing the iPad 3. Thanks to this there are some that believe that Apple could announce the new iPhone 6 well before September of next year. This would mean that the iPhone would also have a shorter lifespan. Some are expecting to see the latest incarnation of the device at the WWDC in June. So far this year Apple has released the iPhone 5, iPad 4, MacBook Pro 13 inch and the iMac 2013 as well as revealing the iPad Mini. These devices were all launched in the 2nd half of 2012 and so Apple could want to space out the launch of devices in 2013 and bring the grandaddy, the iPhone 6, ahead of the pack.
Samsung could receive a makeover in 2013; they could have new styling and branding so as to set themselves apart from Apple, as they were accused in court of copying Apple. Samsung have caught up to Apple and in many ways have passed them, in regards to technology and innovation and should they have a makeover and new styling then they could beat Apple in all aspects. The Samsung Galaxy S3 of course is most criticized for not looking as “premium” as the iPhone 5 despite matching it in all other aspects.
There are many die-hard fans of Apple, however the Galaxy line is also very popular now. Product-Reviews recently asked 22,000 of their Facebook fans whether they might choose the iPhone 6 or the Samsung Galaxy S4 and most of them said they would have the Galaxy S4. They made this choice purely based on what they know of the two makers of handsets and the devices, because the specs for the new devices have yet to be released. Apple do have a cult like following, which does put them in the lead slightly and they have never had to put emphasis on specs to draw in customers. Samsung however push their high end specs to draw in crowds and they continously push boundaries. So everyone expects the same with the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S4
It is thought that the successors to the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 will come with features and performance that are likely equally matched again, hence why reputation may play a bigger part.
