The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the current flagship from Samsung and it makes the Nexus look a bit old and grey. However the S3 comes with TouchWiz and ICS, while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has pure Jelly Bean. So which of these two devices should you buy?
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Both of the devices have Super AMOLED displays. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch display offering 306ppi, while the Nexus has a 4.65 inch screen which is 316ppi. Winner: S3
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is behind the S3 when it comes to processor speed as it has the TI OMAP 1.2GHz Cortex processor and the S3 has the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 with 2GB of RAM here in the US. Winner: S3
When it comes to battery the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 2100mAh which is better than the 1750mAh of the Galaxy Nexus. This means that you can typically get up to 2 hours more talking with the S3. The device has W-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and NFC and the S3 also comes with GLONASS, Bluetooth 4 and A-GPS. Winner: S3
Size wise both of the devices are very similar. The S3 is 81.88 cubic cm and is 133g, while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is 82.93 cubic cm and weighs 135g. The S3 is very sleek and it is shiny, while the Nexus is matte and textured. Personally I prefer the cleaner looking front of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as well as the textured rear compared to the glossy plastic on the S3 with its huge Samsung branding on the screen. Winner: Nexus
The Samsung Galaxy has a back camera of 8 megapixels, while the Nexus comes with a 5 megapixel camera and it is not as sharp as that of the S3 especially in low light. The S3 has a 1.9 megapixel camera while the Nexus comes with a 1.3 megapixel front camera. Winner: S3
Lastly we come to OS. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is running Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has already moved up to Android Jelly Bean. With the year coming to an end and the next Nexus device expected to be unveiled before the holidays, we can expect another update to likely come along. While we don’t have any doubts that the Galaxy Nexus will get this update, the same cannot be said with as much confidence for the S3. With the latest Jelly Bean update bringing a ton of awesome features, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus stands in front on this aspect. Winner: Nexus
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has numerous features and specs that have made it very popular and it has sold over 10 million units to date. The Nexus has faded somewhat, but Jelly Bean has given it a new lease of life. So if it is reliability for updates you want then the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the best bet. If you get a GSM unlocked device you should do well for updates, much better than if you get the device from Sprint or Verizon. Personally I would suggest going for the Samsung Galaxy S3 or holding back and seeing what new Nexus device comes along later this year. The current Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a great steal at $399 unlocked but its days are already numbered.
Of course very soon a new Nexus will be hitting the shelves; therefore if you are not in any rush to upgrade your handset, you may want to hang on for it. who knows, maybe it will have the features and specs of the S3 along with Jelly Bean and the software of the Nexus, which would make it a mean machine.
