Galaxy S3 vs Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5: Getting Better With Age

By  |

The Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in May of 2012 and straight away it reached the best-selling list. Apple launched the Apple iPhone 5 and then LG released the LG Nexus 4. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the oldest of the handsets here, but can it stand up to the newer handsets?

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor and the Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 1.5GHz processor, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a quad core internationally and is dual core in the US. The Apple iPhone 5 is the slower of the devices, but it beats the iPhone 4S has it comes with twice the speed. The LG Nexus 4 comes with 2GB of RAM and it packs quad core processors, however is it better than the Samsung Galaxy S3? The handset has quad core processor, but then it does only come with 1GB of RAM. Anyone wanting 2GB of RAM will have to manage with dual core processors. So with this in mind the LG Nexus 4 is the winner.

If you want an Android handset you will find it hard to beat the LG Nexus 4 as it does have Jelly Bean. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with ICS but it can be updated to Jelly Bean. The Apple iPhone 5 was released with iOS6.1. If you need to customise your handset then you do need to go for the Android devices. However if streamlined is more to your liking you could choose iOS and this is the most stable. The LG Nexus 4 will get updates faster and so you could choose between the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 is available in 8GB or 16GB, however it is let down by the fact that there is no support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers the most storage as it has 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and supports SD card up to another 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with identical storage options, but it lacks SD card support. This means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 wins.

The LG Nexus 4 has a resolution of 1146 x 640 with 218ppi and the display is 4.8 inches. The Apple iPhone 5 offers a display of 4 inches and resolution of 1136 x 640 with 306ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the big boy in the crowd as it has a display of 4.8 inches. While all of the handsets are great, there are some people that say that the IPS displays have more realistic colours, while Super AMOLED displays are over saturated. Thanks to the LG Nexus 4 having the largest IPS display, it wins.

You could get up to 15 hours of talking with the LG Nexus 4 thanks to the fact that it comes with a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5, along with the Samsung Galaxy S3 will both give up to 8 hours.

The LG Nexus 4 weights 129 grams and measures 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 122 grams and is 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm and finally the iPhone comes in as the smallest of the handsets along with being the lightest and so comes out as the winner.

If you want NFC you have the choice of the LG Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3, however if it is LTE that you want then the choice would have to be between the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5. If you want to enjoy both on your handset it will have to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.

All devices have cameras on the back that are 8 megapixels and they support autofocus, 1080p video recording and LED flash. The LG Nexus 4 has a front camera of 1.2 megapixels, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.9 megapixel camera and the Apple iPhone 5 wins thanks to the fact that this comes with the best BSI sensor.

Anyone wanting a device that is easy to use might go for the Apple iPhone 5 and the handset does come with looks that are superb. Those who have a tight budget could choose the LG Nexus 4 as it has a low price; however it does lack LTE and decent storage size. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is an all-round handset and it is packed with all the features expected of a flagship. The price is reasonable too. So while this is the oldest handset here it is still the winner.
