The Samsung Galaxy S3 was released in May 2012 and it was a success as it reached the number one best device. Apple then revealed the Apple iPhone 5 in an attempt to take over and then LG revealed the LG Nexus 4 in November. So which is the best handset and could age beat beauty in this case?
The LG Nexus 4 has a 1.5GHz processor from Qualcomm while the Apple iPhone 5 has a dual core 1.5GHz and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos processor internationally and in the US this is the dual core. The Apple iPhone 5 comes in the slowest of the three, but it beats the Apple iPhone 4 for speed as it does have twice the speed. The LG Nexus 4 offers 2GB of RAM and it comes with quad cores, the Samsung Galaxy S3 also has quad cores but it is matched with 1GB of RAM, while in the US it has 2GB but is dual core. The LG Nexus 4 has to be the winner here.
The LG Nexus 4 runs on pure Android Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 originally had ICS but has received the Jelly Bean update. Of course with the Apple iPhone 5 users have iOS 6, which is the latest OS from Apple and it is streamlined. If you need customisation then it would have to be the Android OS and here you have the choice of the LG Nexus and pure Android or the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Nexus handset will be updated faster though and this is something that you do have to consider. This is just personal choice and so you have to consider the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5 here.
With the LG Nexus you can choose between 8GB and 16GB, but the device is let down by the fact that it doesn’t support SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 oozes storage as it is offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and there is SD card support for another 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the same internal storage but there is no SD card slot. The winner here has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus 4 has a display of 4.7 inches and this is True HD IPS, which comes with a resolution of 1136 x 640 and has ppi of 218. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with 206ppi and offers a resolution of 1136 x 640, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the biggest screen as it is 4.8 inches with a resolution of 1280 x 720 and 306ppi. Each of the devices has a display that is great and the most suitable would be down to personal choice. IPS screens generally offer more realistic colours, while the Super AMOLED displays are over saturated and some owners have said that they look hyper real. The LG Nexus 4 has the largest of the IPS screens so it comes out on top.
On average you can expect around 15 hours of talk time from the LG Nexus as it has a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with around 8 hours of talk time and the Samsung Galaxy S3 will offer around the same.
The LG Nexus comes in at 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm and has a weight of 129 grams and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm with a weight of 112 grams. The winner here has to be the Apple iPhone 5 thanks to having the best looks, but the LG Nexus 4 comes in a close second.
If you want a handset that has NFC you can choose between the LG Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. However if you are after LTE then you could choose the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5. If you need a handset that offers both of these then you would need to choose the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus 4 has an 8 megapixel camera which has autofocus, along with being able to record videos at 1080p; the front camera is 1.3 megapixels. The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand has an 8 megapixel camera and this comes with LED flash and autofocus. The front camera is 1.9 megapixels. The Apple iPhone 5 doesn’t fall behind as it has the 8 megapixel camera along with a front camera of 1.2 megapixels. All of the devices offer something special. The LG Nexus 4 comes with Photo Sphere, the Apple iPhone 5 wins for photos in low light, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 can take both photo and video at the same time. Thanks to it having the best BSI sensor, the Apple iPhone 5 has to win.
Out of all the devices the Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest to use and it has a design that is unbeatable. The LG Nexus 4 gets points for price along with the fact that is has superb hardware, but it does lose points for not having LTE or sufficient storage which is a big no-no for flagships. If you want a device on the other hand that is great all-round then it has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it doesn’t skimp on features and has a decent price tag to match.
