Galaxy S3 vs Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5: The Big 3

By  |

In May of 2012 the Samsung Galaxy S3 was released and it sold so well  that it became the best-seller of they year. In September the Apple iPhone 5 was revealed and in November this was followed by the LG Nexus 4. So which of these flagships is the best? Let’s find out.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5

The LG Nexus 4 has the Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad core processor while the Apple iPhone 5 has the 1.2GHz A6 dual core and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos quad core processor. Over in the US this is the dual core. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the slowest processor but it does have twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 meanwhile has the best possible combination of the three as it comes with quad cores as well as the 2GB of RAM. You can get the Samsung Galaxy S3 with quad cores but it only has 1GB of RAM and if you want 2GB then you only get dual core. As it does have the best of both worlds the LG Nexus 4 has to be the winner.

You can get the LG Nexus 4 with pure Android Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been updated to 4.1 from ICS. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 from Apple and this is the most streamlined. If you want a device that can be customised then you would want one of the Android handsets. This means you have to choose between the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. The LG Nexus 4 will perhaps be the first device to get updated and so this may be the better choice. However it is down to personal choice and so it has to be classed as a draw between the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

The LG Nexus 4 comes in 8GB or 16GB, but there isn’t support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and there is support for SD card up to 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 has the same storage, but there is no support for external storage. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is therefore the winner here.

The LG Nexus 4 has a True HD IPS display which is 4.7 inches and resolution of 1280 x 768 with 318ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with a display of 4 inches of 206ppi and resolution of 1136 x 640 while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a Super AMOLED display offering 306ppi and 1280 x 720 resolution. All displays are great, however people will choose based on preference of what they like. IPS screens usually offer realistic colours and the Super AMOLED displays often look hyper real and they can be over saturated. The LG Nexus 4 has the larger display than the Apple iPhone 5 and so it is the winner here.

The LG Nexus 4 could offer up to 15 hours of talk time as it comes with a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both provide about 8 hours of talking. Recently AnandTech tested the devices and they put the Apple iPhone 5 in top place, and then followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 and then the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 is 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm and weighs 129 grams, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 is just 112 grams and it has measurements of 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm.  In the category of the best looks it is the Apple iPhone 5 that is the top of the list, with the LG Nexus 4 close to it. However the Apple iPhone 5 is the smallest and the lightest of the handsets it is the winner.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 have NFC, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 Both have LTE. If you want both then there is only one handset to go for, the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus and video support of 1080p. There is also a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front of the device. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has 8 megapixels too with support for LED flash and autofocus and it has a camera of 1.9. The Apple iPhone 5 is not left out and it too comes with a camera of 8 megapixels with a 1.2 on the front. All cameras come with advantages, for instance the LG Nexus 4 comes with Photo Sphere while the Apple iPhone 5 is the best in low light and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is known for its ability to take video and photo at the same time. However as it has the best BSI sensor the Apple iPhone 5 comes out tops.

Verdict: Out of the three devices it is the Apple iPhone 5 that is the easiest to use and it does happen to be the best designed. The LG Nexus 4 comes with the lowest price tag and it has comes great hardware, even if it does lose out on some things, it remains superb value for money. The all-round handset and winner is the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it checks all the boxes of a flagship device and comes with a fair price tag.
