Galaxy S3 vs Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5: Threeway Battle

By  |

Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S3 in May of last year and the device went on to become the best seller of that year. The Apple iPhone 5 launched in September and this was then followed on with the LG Nexus 4 in November. But which is the best of the trio of handsets?

LG Nexus 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

The LG Nexus 4 has a Qualcomm 1.5GHz processor, while the Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 dual core processor of 1.2GHz. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with the Exynos quad core chip, while in the US this is the dual core. The Apple iPhone 5 has the slowest processor, but then it is twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 comes with the best of both worlds as it has 2GB of RAM along with four cores. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has either two cores along with 2GB of RAM or it has 1GB of RAM and four cores. Therefore the LG Nexus 4 is the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 runs on Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has Jelly Bean 4.1, and the Apple iPhone 5 has iOS6. If you want an operating system that is streamlined then you may choose iOS, on the other hand if it is customisation that you want then you could go for the Android. The LG Nexus 4 will be the fastest of the devices to be updated and so this could be a better option. However the OS is a matter of personal choice and therefore it has to be a draw between the Apple iPhone 5 and LG Nexus 4.

You can get the LG Nexus in 8GB or 16GB, but the handset does not support SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB or 32GB and the device does support SD card up to 64GB. The Apple iPhone is offered in 16,32 & 64GB but with no support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has to be the winner here.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the True HD IPS display of 4.7 inches and this has a resolution of 1280 x 768 and 318ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 has the 4 inch IPS screen and this has a resolution of 1136 x 640, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a Super AMOLED display of 4.8 inches with 1280 x 720 resolution. All of the displays are superb and the best will be a matter of personal choice. However IPS displays do tend to have a look that is more realistic in regards to colours, while the Super AMOLED displays are often over saturated. The LG Nexus 4 has the larger of the IPS displays and so it is the winner in my opinion.

You may be able to get around 15 hours of talk time with the LG Nexus 4 thanks to the fact that it has a battery of 2100mAh. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 offer around 8 hours. AnandTech recently tested the devices and they have the Apple iPhone 5 ahead, the Samsung Galaxy S3 in second place and the LG Nexus 4 comes in last place.

The LG Nexus 4 is 129 grams and it measures 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams in weight and it is 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm and finally the Apple iPhone 5 weighs in at 112 grams and measures 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. The Apple iPhone 5 has looks that are superb and this makes it the winner in this department, while the LG Nexus 4 comes in the same. However as the Apple iPhone 5 is the smaller, lighter and thinner of the devices it wins.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 have support for NFC, while it is the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 that both have LTE. Therefore it you want NFC and LTE you do have to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The back camera on the LG Nexus 4 is 8 megapixels and it supports LED flash, autofocus and video recording at 1080p, there is also a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel camera that has LED flash and autofocus, and there is also a 1.9 megapixel camera on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 is not left out when it comes to 8 megapixel cameras and this has a 1.2 megapixel on the front. The cameras each have their good and bad points. The LG Nexus 4 has Photosphere, the Apple iPhone 5 is great in low light conditions and the Samsung Galaxy S3 takes very good video and stills at the same time. The Apple iPhone 5 has the best BSI sensor and this is why we will give it the victory.

Verdict: The Apple iPhone 5 is one of the easiest phones to use and it happens to look the best. The LG Nexus 4 is the cheapest of the devices and it does have some great hardware that ensures it offers value for money. However the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the best all-round handset as it comes packed with the best balance of features and it has a price tag that happens to be in the middle of the road.
