Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4: S3 Ready To Retire Throne?

By  |

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is set to get the update to Jelly Bean, and this is great news. However Google and LG have revealed the Nexus 4 and this comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and it is packed with serious hardware. So is the S3 about to hand over the crown of best Android this year to the Nexus 4?

The Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a large Super AMOLED display of 4.8 inches with 1280 x 768 resolution, which is covered with Gorilla Glass. The LG Nexus 4 on the other hand has a True HD IPS display of 4.7 inches, with resolution that is very similar to the S3. The IPS display tends to offer a more natural look and is easier to see in direct sunlight, while the AMOLED display offers colours that are vivid and it has blacks that are intense. However in sunlight it doesn’t match the Nexus display and due to this is wins, but only just and this is down to the brightness levels and the fact that the colours on the S3 can appear hyper real at times. Winner: LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers a camera of 8 megapixels which comes with LED flash and autofocus. The camera can also take videos at 1080p and it has a camera on the front capable of taking videos at 720p. The Nexus also has a camera of 8 megapixels on the front and this too comes with LED flash, autofocus and can record 1080p videos. The camera on the front is 1.3 megapixels. Both devices have cameras that are equally matched, however as they haven’t been tested yet, this category has to be a draw. Winner: Draw

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and it supports SD card up to another 64GB. The LG Nexus 4 is a let down in this area as it comes in 8GB or 16GB and lacks SD card storage. Therefore the S3 wins. Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3

The S3 comes out of the box with ICS, and it is slowly getting updated to Jelly Bean Android 4.1. The Nexus on the other hand comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and this puts it ahead along with the fact that it will be among the first devices to receive updates in the future.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on the 1.4GHz quad core Exynos processor internationally, with 1GB of RAM. In the US is has the dual core 1.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. The LG Nexus 4 comes with a quad core Snapdragon 1.5GHz processor and has 2GB of RAM. As the Nexus has the best of both, it comes out on top. Winner: LG Nexus 4

Both of the handsets have 2100mAh batteries and at the moment these haven’t been compared, until the Nexus comes out on the 13th November. Winner: Draw

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been called tacky by some people, thanks to the plastic fantastic styling. The LG Nexus 4 looks to be the classier of the two handsets, with the more premium build, which had been compared to the build quality of the glass-sandwiched iPhone 4S. Therefore the Nexus 4 wins this category. Winner: LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been very popular since its release in the summer, so it will be interesting to see if the cheaper LG Nexus 4 can bring it down. It does offer a lot, however it is let down by the fact that it lacks expandable storage and it doesn’t support LTE. On the plus side it comes with a price tag of $299 while the S3 would set you back more than $500. It also has a better display, more powerful processor and the advantage of quicker updates, all of which could mask the two penalties.
