There are numerous handsets out at the moment which people will be adding on to their Christmas list this year. So which out of the Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4, should be at the top of your list?
iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4
The Samsung Galaxy S3 was released this summer and is the highest selling smartphone this year so far. The iPhone 5 was released in September and the LG Nexus 4 is coming out later in the month with the pure Android experience.
The LG Nexus 4 has the Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad core processor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos quad core processor at 1.4GHz. However in the US this is a dual core 1.5GHz processor. The iPhone 5 comes with the A6 processor of Apple which is 1.2GHz. While it doesn’t seem to be as powerful as the other two devices, the processor is twice as fast as the A5 in the iPhone 4S. On paper, the LG Nexus 4 seems to be ahead as it has the best combination of maximum number of cores and RAM (quad-core and 2GB RAM).
The LG Nexus 4 come with a 4.7 inch True HD IPS Plus display that has a resolution of 1280 x 768 and 318ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Super AMOLED display of 4.8 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 720 and 306ppi, while the iPhone 5 comes with the 4 inch display of 326ppi and 1136 x 640. All of them are superb screens and the most suitable is down to what you want. The IPS displays perform better in direct sunlight thanks to higher brightness levels and the colors seem more realistic. The AMOLED boasts deeper blacks and vibrant colors than IP displays. Personally I prefer IPS displays like on the iPhone 5 and LG Nexus 4 as I find the S3 colors to appear hyper-real. And since the LG Nexus 4 has the screen size advantage, I would pick it over the iPhone 5 when it comes to display.
The LG Nexus 4 has 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, which is a bit of a let-down considering there is no support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and comes with 1GB of RAM and it supports SD card up to 64GB. The iPhone 5 is also available in all of the storage options of the Samsung Galaxy S3, however it doesn’t support SD card. Winner: S3
The camera on the LG Nexus 4 is 8 megapixels and it can record at 1080p. It has LED flash and Autofocus and there is also a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the front and Photosphere panorama. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a camera of 8 megapixels too and this can capture video at 1080p, it comes with autofocus and LED flash and has a 1.9 camera on the front. The iPhone 5 features an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video and LED flash and autofocus and comes with a camera of 1.2 on the front. All of the cameras have plenty of features plus advantages of their own. The S3 can take photos and video at the same time, the LG Nexus 4 already has Android 4.2 so has Photosphere, and the iPhone 5 BSI sensor makes it the best when it comes to taking pictures in low light. The winner is up to you.
The OS is one of the crucial factors when choosing a phone and the LG Nexus 4 comes with the pure Google experience and it has Jelly Bean Android 4.2. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has ICS and is getting updated to Jelly Bean slowly. The iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6. The obvious choice here will be between the Nexus and the iPhone. And the most common way to compare iOS to Android is which better suits your lifestyle. If you want something that is easy to use, streamlined and works right out of the box then the iPhone 5 it is. If you want customizability, flexibility and widgets then the LG Nexus 4 takes the cake. The S3 offers this as well but you don’t have the reliability of future updates like the other two phones.
The battery life on the LG Nexus 4 is around 15 hours on paper thanks to the 2100mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S3 should last around 11 hours on 3G and the iPhone 5 has the smallest battery of 1440mAh which offers around 8 hours of talk time on 3G. However a recent battery test by AnandTech put the iPhone 5 ahead, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 and then the LG Nexus 4 at last place.
The LG Nexus 4 measures 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm and it weighs 139g, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6m, weighing 133g. The iPhone 5 is 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm and weighs 112g, which happens to make it the smallest and lightest device. Design wise it is a draw between the Nexus 4 and iPhone 5 as they are both great looking devices.
When it comes to price the LG Nexus 4 is only available in the Google Play Store and comes with a price tag of $299 for the 8GB and £349 for the 16GB, both of which are unlocked. The Samsung Galaxy S3 starts at around $550 unlocked. The unlocked iPhone 5 is not available in the US as of yet but a recent leak hints that it will come in just after Black Friday and start at $650.
Along with all of the above factors you do have to take into account that the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 have support for NFC, which the iPhone does not; and the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 have support for LTE, which the LG Nexus 4 does not.
If you want a device that is light and “just works” then you may go for the iPhone 5, however if you want the best value for money then the LG Nexus 4 is the winner, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a superb all round handset as it packs a ton of features (more than its two rivals) and is priced right in the middle.
