iPhone 5 & Samsung Galaxy S3: Grand Champs Weigh In

Apple says that five million iPhone 5 units were sold within three days of launch, but this total was lower than analysts’ estimates. The sales beat the iPhone 4S’ four million sales in its first 72 hours, but only just. The iPhone 5 is on sale in 23 countries now, and is expected to be in more than 100 countries by the end of 2012.

Samsung was pleased to announce that global sales of the Samsung Galaxy S3 topped 20 million after just 100 days on the market.  So how do the two most popular smartphones this year compare to one another? It’s time for an official weigh-in of their specs!

iPhone 5

Display: 4” diagonal with a resolution of 1,136 by 640 pixels.

Memory capacity: 16, 32 or 64GB, with price ascending with capacity. There’s still no micro-SD support to expand the memory.

Price: Starts at $199 for 16GB versions.

Dimensions: height: 4.87”; width: 2.31”; depth: 0.30” (124 x 59 x 7.6 mm).

Weight: 3.95oz (112g)

Cameras: 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.2-megapixel front camera.

Video recording: high-definition, 1080p, which is comparable to the resolution of a 40-inch flat panel TV.  It can take up to 30 frames per second with audio.

Battery life: up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G. up to 8 hours of browsing on LTE and up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi. There’s also up to 10 hours of video playback. The battery is non-removable and can only be replaced by service personnel.

Operating system: Apple iOS 6, which will is available for download to older iPhones.

Near-field communications: Not included.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Display: 4.8” diagonally with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels.

Memory capacity: 16 or 32GB, and this can be expanded up to another 64GB with a memory card.

Price: From as $99 for 16GB model

Dimensions: height: 5.4”; width: 2.8”; depth: 0.34” (137 x 71 x 8.6mm)

Weight: 4.7oz. (133g)

Cameras: 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.9-megapixel front camera.

Video recording: high-definition 1080p – similar resolution to a 40-inch flat panel TV – up to 30 fps with audio.

Battery life: Up to 9 hours of talk time depending on network. The battery is replaceable by the user.

Operating system: Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Near-field communications: Yes. A chip means the phone acts as a credit card at selected payment terminals and shares data wirelessly when tapped against some other phones.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, PC, iPhone and Android games keep Berke busy at work all day. Honestly though we’re not sure why we’re paying him as it should be the other way around.
