Three devices that stand out at the moment are the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4. All are superb handsets, so which would you choose?
iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the oldest as it was released in the summer and it has been the best-selling device since. The iPhone 5 followed it in September and the LG Nexus 4 came out just last month.
The LG Nexus 4 has the 1.5GHz quad core processor from Qualcomm, the iPhone 5 has the A6 1.2GHz dual core processor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with the Exynos 1.5GHz dual core processor in the US. On paper the iPhone 5, while being twice as fast as the 4S, is the slowest of the three devices. The LG Nexus 4 is the quickest of the devices, at least on paper, as it has 2GB of RAM and quad cores. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with 2GB of RAM but is only has two cores, and the quad core version has 1GB of RAM. Advantage: LG Nexus 4.
When it comes to displays the LG Nexus 4 has a display of 4.7 inches with 318ppi and a True HD IPS resolution of 1280 x 768. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Super AMOLED screen of 1280 x 720 and 306ppi, while the iPhone 5 has a display of 4 inches and it is IPS with 306ppi and it is 1136 x 640. All displays are superb and of course which is the best will be down to which you like personally. The IPS screen is the most preferred and the screen does well in bright light, with colours being realistic. The AMOLED screen tends to be vibrant and the blacks are deep, however some say that the colours are too hyper real. IPS is more popular and the Nexus 4 from LG has the largest IPS display in this comparison and so takes the cake. Advantage: LG Nexus 4.
You can get your hands on the LG Nexus 4 in 8GB or 16GB, however it doesn’t support SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and it also supports SD card up to another 64GB. The iPhone 5 also comes in the same choices, however it lacks support for SD card and so the winner is naturally the S3. Advantage: Samsung Galaxy S3
The LG Nexus 4 comes with an 8 megapixel camera and this has LED flash and autofocus and it can record videos at 1080p. The device also comes with a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the back. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also comes with the 8 megapixel camera and on the front there is a camera of 1.9 megapixels. The camera on the back features LED flash support and autofocus. The iPhone 5 is not outdone and it too has the camera of 8 megapixels. This has support for autofocus and LED flash too. The camera on the front is 1.2 megapixels. Each device’s camera has some pros and cons. The Samsung Galaxy S3 can record video and take pictures at the same time, while the LG Nexus 4 has PhotoSphere and the iPhone 5 is perfect for taking photos in low light thanks to its BSI sensor. The winner here is the iPhone 5 for the best hardware (sensor). Advantage: iPhone 5
In regards to the OS, the LG Nexus 4 has Android Jelly Bean 4.2 installed, the iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 and the Galaxy S3 runs on Jelly Bean 4.1, but originally comes with ICS. The most streamlined of these operating systems is iOS 6. If you want plenty of customisation then you would have to go with the Android phones. Both the Nexus 4 and Galaxy S3 come with Android, but if you want a device that will be updated regularly and quickly it has to be the Nexus 4. The choice of operating system will be down to what you prefer and so this means that it is a draw.
The LG Nexus 4 comes with a battery of 2100mAh and this may give you around 15 hours talking before needing to be recharged. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 both offer around 8 hours of talk time. AnandTech carried out a battery test and they put the iPhone 5 in the lead, with the Galaxy S3 coming in second and the Nexus 4 trailing behind. Advantage: iPhone 5
The LG Nexus 4 weighs 129 grams and measures 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and is 136.6mmx70.6mmx8.6mm, and the iPhone 5 is just 112 grams and is 123.8mmx58.6mmx7.6mm. When it comes to design, the iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4 are both winners as they simply look gorgeous. However the iPhone 5 happens to be the lightest of the handsets and is also the thinnest and so it is the overall winner. Advantage: iPhone 5
The LG Nexus 4 comes with the price tag of $299 if you want to get the 8GB version, while you can expect to pay out $349 for the 16GB version. The Samsung Galaxy S3 not on contract will cost you $550 and the iPhone 5 off contract comes with a price tag of $650 for the base model. The winner here has to be the Nexus 4, with the lowest price tag. Advantage: LG Nexus 4
The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 both come with NFC, however the iPhone 5 is missing it. The Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 have LTE but this is not found on the Nexus 4. This means that if you want LTE and NFC you would have to choose the Samsung Galaxy S3. Advantage: Samsung Galaxy S3
Totaling it up, the Samsung Galaxy S3 won 2 categories, the LG Nexus 4 won 3 categories and the iPhone 5 picked up 3 categories as well. So looking at the two winners now, if it is a user friendly device that you want, with a great camera and superb design, then the iPhone 5 could be the most suitable. The LG Nexus 4 on the other hand offers excellent value for money along with deep customisation and an excellent display.
