When Samsung released the Galaxy S3 they set a new precedence in the smartphone market. It is one that Apple will have to beat with the release of their upcoming iPhone 5. But at the moment has the “current crop” of Apple become too stale to match up to the Samsung Galaxy S3?
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S
One of the first things that make the Samsung Galaxy S3 stand out is the display. This is a beautiful 4.8 inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1280×720. At the moment the current version of the iPhone, the 4S, has a 3.5 inch Retina display with pixels of 960×640. The iPhone is the smaller of the two and is easier to slip into the pocket, but the clear winner thanks to clarity of the display is the Galaxy S3.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 weighs 133g and measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and the iPhone 4S is 140g and 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm. The S3 may be lighter and thinner but the design of the iPhone 4S feels much more premium and luxurious. Therefore in the looks department, the winner has to be the iPhone 4S.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is packed with a Snapdragon quad core processor internationally and 1GB of RAM. The 4S has 512MB of RAM and runs on the A5 processor. While both processors do an excellent job, it is the S3 that comes out on top with double the RAM and a processor that is more powerful.
Both handsets sport an 8 megapixel camera behind but the S3 comes with a 1.3 megapixel on the front. The iPhone 4S on the other hand has only a 0.3 megapixel camera on the front. With its better front camera and the fact that it has burst mode and zero shutter lag, the Galaxy S3 wins in this category. Interestingly it was recently pointed out that the S3 has the same camera chip that is found in the iPhone 4S. Therefore, it should be able to take photos of the same quality in low light conditions and outdoors.
Both of the handsets have the latest OS installed out of the box. However, there is an update now for the S3 now, courtesy of Android 4.1, and it’s just a matter of time until the device receives it (rumored for late 2012).
In regards to battery life, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 2100mAh battery and the iPhone 4S, 1420mAh. Users of the S3 get around three times the standby that those using the iPhone 4S get. Another plus point in the favor of the Galaxy S3 is that the battery is removable and this makes it a winner.
Can’t wait for iPhone 5?
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a better handset in just about every ways aside from its looks. But this should not be surprising as it is the newer of the two handsets and is obviously designed to go up against the upcoming iPhone 5. So if you don’t want to wait for the iPhone 5 to appear on the market then the S3 is the best choice of the current two available handsets.
