Owners of the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U are not pleased to hear that the Nintendo Switch isn’t going to be backwards compatible with the games from the other consoles.

The trailer for the Nintendo Switch revealed only a few details about the console but it did reveal that the system is going to use cartridges. This is good news for gamers but it did beg the question of whether the cartridges would be compatible with the Nintendo 3DS.

While Nintendo hasn’t spoken out about the Nintendo Switch but Famitsu said that the console isn’t going to be compatible with the discs from the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS cartridges. While the cartridges are not going to be compatible this doesn’t mean that digital games cannot be used.

At the moment we don’t know if the Nintendo Switch is going to offer up a touch screen display, something which would be needed for support for 3DS and Wii U games. We also don’t have any idea whether the Switch would be able to act as a second game screen as the Wii U can.

If the games from the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are not compatible, will this put you off from purchasing the Nintendo Switch?

This is backwards. The people who are unimpressed are the people who DON’T own Wii U/3DS, obviously. The people who do own them can already play all the Wii U/3DS games they want.
