MINI announce that they will be offering a new seven-speed dual clutch transmission on some of their models including the three and five-door hatchbacks models as well as their convertible.
According to Mini, the new transmission will combine two partial transmissions into a single housing. One of the clutches will be responsible for the transmission ratios 2,4 and 6 while the other will be responsible for 1,3,5 and 7 as well as the reverse gear.
Because of this, there is always one clutch that is ready to respond to the shift which is why it should be faster and smoother. All models fitted with the new transmission will also be given a small electronic shifter which will help position it back to its original position after selecting between drive, neutral and reverse. The shifter will also come with a Sport mode as well as a park button.
No word on when we will be seeing this on the road.
