In May of last year the Samsung Galaxy S3 was released and the handset went on to become a success, reaching the best-sellers list of 2012. The Apple iPhone 5 was released towards the end of the year and then the LG Nexus 4 followed on. So which of these devices comes out top?
The LG Nexus 4 was released with a Qualcomm processor of 1.5GHz, the Apple iPhone 5 has the 1.5Ghz dual core and the Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on the quad core Exynos processor or in the case of the US, the dual core processor. The slowest of the three is the Apple iPhone 5, however it does have twice the speed of the Apple iPhone4. The LG Nexus 4 has 2GB of RAM matched with quad core processors, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core processor but with only 1GB of RAM. In the US it comes with 2GB but this is dual core. Thanks to this the LG Nexus 4 comes out as the winner.
The LG Nexus 4 is a pure Android handset with Jelly Bean 4.2, the Samsung Galaxy S3 runs ICS out of the box but it has received the update to Jelly Bean. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the latest iOS, which is iOS6 and this is the most streamlined. You will have to turn to Android if you want customisation. In this case you would have to choose between the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Nexus does have pure Android and this will usually mean updates are faster. However the OS is a matter of personal choice and so you may wish to choose between the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4.
The LG Nexus 4 comes in the choice of 8GB or 16GB; however there is no SD card support. The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers plenty of storage choices and it includes SD card support for up to 64GB. You can get the Samsung Galaxy S3 in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 has the same options for its internal storage but it is let down by the fact that there is no support for SD card. Therefore as it has the best choices for storage the winner has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus offers a display that is True HD IPS and which is 4.7 inches. It has a resolution of 1146 x 640, along with ppi of 218. The Apple iPhone 5 on the other hand comes with the smaller display of 4 inches which gives 206ppi and 1136x 640 resolution. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the boss when it comes to screens thanks to its 4.8 inch display offering 306pp and resolution of 1280 x 720. All handsets come with great displays and the best is down to what you like. The IPS displays generally offer more realistic colours, while the Super AMOLED screen can look over saturated and some people say that they are hyper real. As the LG Nexus 4 comes with the largest IPS display of them all it wins.
You may get up to 15 hours of use with the LG Nexus 4 as this handset comes with a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 should both provide around the same amount at 8 hours.
The LG Nexus is 129 grams and is 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 112 grams and it measures 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 is the lightest of the three and smallest and so it wins, with the LG Nexus 4 not far behind.
If you need your handset to have NFC then you have the choice of the LG Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. However if you need LTE then your choices will be the Apple iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. The only device to offer both of these is the Samsung Galaxy S3.
For the cameras the LG Nexus 4 comes with a camera of 8 megapixels on the front and this includes autofocus and recording of videos in 1080p, there is also a front camera of 1.3 megapixels. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with an 8 megapixel camera and supports autofocus and LED flash. It also has a camera of 1.9 megapixel on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 is not out of place as it too comes with a camera of 8 megapixels and one of 1.2 megapixels on the front. All of the devices offer something that is unique to them and in the case of the LG Nexus 4 it wins points for having PhotoSphere, the Apple iPhone 5 has the best camera when taking photos in low light and the Samsung Galaxy S3 can take video and photos together. As it has the best BSI sensor the Apple iPhone 5 wins.
Of all the handsets the Apple iPhone 5 is easy to pick up and use and the style simply cannot be beaten. For its low price tag the LG Nexus 4 wins and the fact that it does have some great hardware. However it does lack decent storage and it doesn’t come with LTE. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is classed as being an all-round device as it has plenty of features and it comes with a price tag that is decent. So despite its age, it takes the crown.
