In May of last year the Samsung Galaxy S3 was released and went on to become the best-selling handset of the year. Apple then released the Apple iPhone 5 in September and this was followed up by the LG Nexus 4 in November of 2012.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the Qualcomm chip of 1.5GHz, the Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 dual core chip of 1.2GHz and the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with the Exynos quad core processor internationally and this is the dual core in the US. The Apple iPhone 5 may come with the slowest processor, however it does have twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. As the LG Nexus offers the best of both thanks to its four cores and 2GB of RAM is wins, as with the Samsung Galaxy S3 you either get 2GB of RAM and two cores or 1GB of RAM and dual cores.
The LG Nexus 4 runs on Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with ICS but has the update to Jelly Bean 4.1. The Apple iPhone 5 meanwhile has iOS 6 and for anyone who wants an OS that is the most streamlined then iOS is the best choice. Both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus come with Android, however the LG Nexus 4 will get updates first and it is pure Android. Of course the OS is down to personal choice and so this has to be a draw between the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4.
The LG Nexus 4 is offered with either 8GB or 16GB and it doesn’t support SD card. The Samsung Galaxy comes with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and there is support for SD card up to 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 come with the same internal storage, however there is no SD card support. This means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the winner here.
The LG Nexus 4 has the True HD IPS display of 4.7 inches and this has the resolution of 1280 x 768 and 318ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the IPS display of 4 inches and resolution of 1136 x 640. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a display of 4.8 inches and this is Super AMOLED of 1280 x 720p. The IPS displays are generally the more realistic for colours and the Super AMOLED can look over saturated. The LG Nexus 4 has the largest IPS display which makes it the winner.
You should find that you can get around 15 hours of talking with the LG Nexus 4 as it comes with a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both offer around 8 hours. In recent tests AnandTech put the Apple iPhone 5 as the winner, with the Samsung Galaxy coming in second place and the LG Nexus 4 in last place.
When it comes down to weight the LG Nexus 4 is 129 grams and has dimensions of 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in at 133 grams and is 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 is only 112 grams and has measurements of 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. As the Apple iPhone 5 has the best looks and it is the smallest handset it wins, however the LG Nexus 4 is close behind it.
The LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 have both got support for NFC, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 along with the Apple iPhone 5 have both got support for LTE. Therefore if you want both you have no choice but to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus 4 has an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus and video at 1080p, along with a camera on the front of 1.3 megapixels. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also has the 8 megapixel camera and this supports autofocus and LED flash; it also has a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 has a camera of 8 megapixels and it also has a 1.2 megapixel on the front. All cameras come with good and bad points. You get Photo Sphere with the LG Nexus 4, the Apple iPhone 5 is the best in low light and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the option to capture videos and stills at the same time. The BSI sensor of the Apple iPhone 5 is best and this means it wins.
If you want a device that is very easy to use and looks beautiful then choose the Apple iPhone 5. However the LG Nexus 4 is the cheapest of the bunch and it has hardware that offers the best value for money despite lacking some important features like decent storage space and LTE. It is the Samsung Galaxy S3 that is the best all-round handset as it doesn’t skimp on features while maintaining a price tag that is decent.
