LG Nexus 4 vs S3 vs iPhone 5: King Of Kings Is…

By  |

The three kings of this year in regards to handsets are arguably the LG Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5. All three devices have managed to maintain the same level of hype they had before their release right until now. But which of these three great devices is the king of the kings?

LG Nexus 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

The Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in May 2012 and it has been a best-seller. The Apple iPhone 5 was revealed in September, and the baby of the bunch is the LG Nexus 4, which was released in November.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with a 1.5GHz quad core processor from Qualcomm, the Apple iPhone 5 comes with the A6 dual core processor, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core processor internationally and the 1.5GHz dual core in the US. On paper the Apple iPhone 5 has the slowest chip; however it does happen to be twice as fast as the processor found in the iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 happens to be the fastest on paper as it has four cores, along with 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also comes with 2GB of RAM, but the device is only dual core. There is a quad core version of the handset, but this has 1GB of RAM. Therefore the winner here has to be the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with a display of 4.7 inches and this is True HD IPS, with a resolution of 1280 x 768 and 318ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a display that is Super AMOLED and is 4.8 inches with 306ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 has the Retina display (IPS as well) and it is 4 inches. All devices have great displays, but the best would be down to a matter of preference. Many people prefer IPS displays over the Super AMOLED as they tend to have realistic colours and levels of brightness that are higher. The Super AMOLED displays have blacks that deep, but many people say that they are hyper realistic. As the IPS screens are the most preferred and the LG Nexus 4 has the larger IPS screen, it is the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 comes in a choice of 8GB or 16GB, but it doesn’t have support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB, and it supports SD card up to 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 has the same storage choices, but it doesn’t support SD card. The winner in this category has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has a camera of 8 megapixel and it has support for LED flash, autofocus and it takes video at 1080p. The device also has a camera of 1.3 megapixel on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also comes with a back camera of 8 megapixel and it has a 1.9 megapixel camera on the front, the camera support LED flash and autofocus. The Apple iPhone 5 is not left out as it too has an 8 megapixel camera, which also supports autofocus and LED flash. The camera on the front is 1.2 megapixel. All of the cameras come with good points. The Samsung Galaxy S3 camera can capture video and photos, the LG Nexus 4 camera comes with Photo Sphere and the Apple iPhone 5 has what is considered to be the best BSI sensor, which means it is the winner as it is the best in low light conditions.

The LG Nexus 4 runs on Jelly Bean 4.2, which is the latest Android OS. The Apple iPhone 5 also has the latest OS by way of iOS 6. The Samsung Galaxy S3 ships with ICS, however it has been updated almost everywhere to Jelly Bean 4.1. If you want a handset that offers plenty of customisation then you could choose Android. Both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 have Android. The LG Nexus 4 will get updates before the Samsung Galaxy S3 though. Of course the operating system is a matter of choice and it has to be counted as a draw between the Apple iPhone 5 with iOS 6 and the LG Nexus 4 with Jelly Bean 4.2.

The LG Nexus 4 has a battery of 2100mAh and this should offer up to 15 hours talking. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 should offer around 8 hours. On the contrary, AnandTech undertook tests which put the Apple iPhone 5 in first place, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 close behind and the LG Nexus 4 in last place.

The LG Nexus 4 has a weight of 129 grams and the measurements are 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in at 133 grams and has measurements of  136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 is only a mere 112 grams and it has measurements of 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm. When it comes down to looks and the design of the device, the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5 both have high end styling. Nevertheless the Apple iPhone 5 is the thinner of the two and it is the lightest as well, hence the winner.

You can get your hands on the LG Nexus 4 for $299 for the 8GB version, while the 16GB comes with a price tag of $349. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes out of contract for $550 and the Apple iPhone 5 out of contract costs around $650, if you want the 16GB. The LG Nexus 4 is the winner as it has the lowest price.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 both support NFC, while the Apple iPhone 5 doesn’t. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 support LTE, while the LG Nexus 4 doesn’t. Thanks to the Samsung Galaxy S3 having support for both LTE and NFC, this makes it the winner.

Verdict: If you want a handset that is the most user friendly, has a solid camera and great design it would have to be the Apple iPhone 5. However if price is an issue then the LG Nexus 4 with its top notch hardware and promise of speedy future updates is your best bet. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a superb all-round handset as it doesn’t skimp on hardware or features. It also has a price tag that is not out of this world.
