Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3: Who’s The Daddy?

By  |

Three top handsets at the moment happen to be the LG Nexus 4, the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. But which of these three great handsets is the best of them all?

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 vs LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was released in May and went on to become the best-selling device of 2012. The iPhone 5 was then released in September and then followed the LGNexus 4 just last month.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the quad core processor from Qualcomm at 1.5GHz, the iPhone 5 is dual core and has the A6 1.2GHz processor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core from Exynos internationally and the dual core 1.5GHz processor in the US. The iPhone 5 has the chip that is the slowest (on paper); however it is two times faster than the iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 happens to be the fastest handset, on paper at least, thanks to it having the four cores and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has 2GB of RAM but it is dual core, while the quad core only comes with 1GB RAM. Therefore the winner has to be the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the True HD IPS 4.7 inch display and this is 1280 x 768 with ppi of 318. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a Super AMOLED display with 306ppi and resolution of 1280 x 720. The iPhone 5 comes with the 4 inch display of IPS with 306ppi and resolution of 1136 x 640. Of course all of the displays are excellent and the best will be chosen depending on taste and what the person wants. IPS displays are generally prefered as they do perform in bright light very well and offer more realistic colors. The AMOLED displays are vibrant and they offer deep blacks but many find the colors hyper-real. As the IPS display is generally preferred by many, the LG Nexus 4 is the winner as it has the larger display than the IPS iPhone 5.

The LG Nexus 4 comes in either 8GB or 16GB and the downside is the lack of SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and it supports SD card up to as much as 64GB. The iPhone 5 has the same choices as the Galaxy S3 but it doesn’t support SD card. Therefore the winner here has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has the camera of 8 megapixel and it comes with autofocus and it has LED flash and take video at 1080p. There is a camera of 1.3 megapixel on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel camera on the back and on the front there is a 1.9 megapixel camera. The back camera comes with autofocus and LED flash. The iPhone 5 comes with an 8 megapixel camera on the back which also has support for LED flash and autofocus and there is a camera of 1.2 megapixel on the front. Each of the cameras has their good and bad points. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is able to take photos and video at the same time, the LG Nexus 4 comes with PhotoSphere and the iPhone 5 camera is excellent in low light. Thanks to the BSI sensor the iPhone 5 is the winner here as it has the best in class camera hardware for low light shots. However people will choose the best based on what they want from a camera.

When it comes to operating systems the LG Nexus 4 comes with Jelly Bean 4.2 and the iPhone 5 has iOS 6, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has Jelly Bean 4.1. If you want a handset that is the most streamlined then you would go for iOS 6. However if it is customisation that you want then Android is the best. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 both have Android, however if you choose the Nexus you will not have to wait around for updates to the device from carriers. As the choice of operating system is down to personal preference though, this has to be a draw.

The battery of the LG Nexus 4 is 2100mAh and this should offer around 15 hours of talk time. The iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 should offer around 8 hours. A test by AnandTech did reveal that the iPhone 5 was in first place, the Samsung Galaxy S3 came in second and the LG Nexus 4 was last.

The LG Nexus 4 has a weight of 129 grams and is 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in at 136.6mmx70.6mmx8.6mm and it weighs 133 grams, and in comparison the iPhone 5 is tiny at 123.8mmx58.6mmx7.6mm and weighing just 112 grams. For looks and design both the LG Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5 are as pretty as each other, however as the iPhone 5 is thinner and lighter, it wins.

You can get your hands on the LG Nexus 4 for $299 for the 8GB version, while the 16GB version is $349. The Samsung Galaxy S3 out of contract will be around $550 and if you want an iPhone 5 off contract then you would pay around $650 for the 16GB version. The LG Nexus 4 is the winner when it comes to price.

The LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both have NFC, but the iPhone 5 does not. The iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3 both have LTE, but the Nexus 4 does not. So the Samsng Galaxy S3 is the only device of the trio with both LTE and NFC, making it the winner.

Bottom line

The iPhone 5 is one of the most user friendly handsets and has a great design and solid camera. The LG Nexus 4 is excellent value for money and offers the best customisation promises of more “tricks” to come via future Android update. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a well balanced handset for those who want everything and anything as it comes with numerous features and at a decent price tag.
