The Samsung Galaxy S3 was shown to the world in May last year and the handset was the best-seller of that year. The Apple iPhone 5 was revealed in September and then the LG Nexus 4 followed in November, but which of the handsets is the best?
The LG Nexus 4 comes with the 1.5GHz Qualcomm quad core processor, the Apple iPhone 5 has the 1.2GHz dual core and in the Samsung Galaxy S3 there is an Exynos quad core, while in the US this is only a dual core. The Apple iPhone 5 has the processor that is the slowest, but then it is twice as fast as the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 has the advantage as it has quad cores and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core processor; however it only has 1GB of RAM, while the 2GB of RAM is dual core. Thanks to it offering both, the LG Nexus 4 wins.
The LG Nexus 4 has pure Android, in the form of Jelly Bean 4.2 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has Jelly Bean 4.2 up from ICS. The Apple iPhone 5 has iOS6, which happens to be the most streamlined of all of the operating systems. If you are looking for a device that offers customisation you would want either of the Android devices. So therefore you have to choose between the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4. The LG Nexus 4 should get updates quicker and therefore you may be pushed towards this. Of course the OS is a matter of personal choice and with this in mind the LG Nexus 4 and Apple iPhone 5, both come out tops.
You can choose between 8GB or 16GB with the LG Nexus 4, but the device doesn’t support SD card. With the Samsung Galaxy S3 you have the choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and you can add on another 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 offers the same solutions for storage, with the exception of SD card support. The winner is clear here, it has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus 4 offers a display of 4.7 inches which is True HD IPS at 1280 x 768 and it has 318ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 is packed with a display of 4 inches and it has a resolution of 1136 x 640 with 206ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the largest display at 4.8 inches offering 306ppi and resolution of 1280 x 720. While all of the screens are superb, the best will be down to what you prefer. The IPS display can look more realistic in regards to colours, while the Super AMOLED display may look over saturated and hyper real. The LG Nexus 4 comes with a bigger display that the Apple iPhone 5 and this makes is stand out as the winner.
With the LG Nexus 4 you could get around 15 hours of talk time out of the 2100mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 5 both provide around 8 hours of talk time. When AnandTech looked at the devices they said the Apple iPhone 5 was at number one, with the Samsung Galaxy behind it and then the LG Nexus 4.
The LG Nexus 4 is 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm and weighs 129 grams, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm, and the Apple iPhone 5 is only 112 grams with measurements of 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. For looks the Apple iPhone 5 wins, however the LG Nexus 4 is not far behind. However thanks to the fact that it is the lightest and smallest, the Apple iPhone 5 is the winner.
If you want NFC then you can choose between the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the LG Nexus 4. If you want LTE then choices are the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5. Of course if you want both NFC and LTE then there is only one choice, the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The camera of the LG Nexus 4 is 8megapixels and this comes with support for video at 1080p and autofocus. The device has a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 packs an 8 megapixel camera too and support autofocus and LED flash and has a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 doesn’t want to be left behind and so this too has a camera of 8 megapixels, along with a 1.2 megapixel on the front. All cameras offer something different. With the LG Nexus 4 you get Photo Sphere, the Apple iPhone 5 is best in low light and the Samsung Galaxy S3 brags the fact that it records video and takes photos at the same time. Thanks to it having the best BSI sensor the Apple iPhone 5 is the winner.
Out of the three handsets it is the Apple iPhone 5 that is the easiest of the handsets to use and comes with a superb design. The LG Nexus 4 scores points for price and it is packed with some great hardware, although it does miss out on some things. The all-round winner is the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it comes with everything a flagship handset should have and the price tag is decent too.
