Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3: Best Of The Best Is…

By  |

There are three top handsets on the market at the moment in the form of the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4, but which of these takes the crown as being the best?

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5

The oldest of these handsets is the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it was released during the summer months and been a best seller ever since. The iPhone 5 came out in September and the LG Nexus 4 is the new kid on the block, having been released just last month.

The LG Nexus 4 has the Qualcomm quad core processor of 1.5GHz, while the iPhone 5 has a dual core A6 processor of 1.2GHz. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was released in two different versions. In the US it has the dual core processor of 1.5GHz with 2GB RAM, overseas it is a quad-core with 1GB RAM. When you look at things on paper, the iPhone 5 should be the slowest, but it does have twice the speed of the iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 should be the fastest device, on paper at least and this is thanks to it having 2GB of RAM along with a quad core processor. The S3 also has 2GB of RAM, however it has a dual core processor, while the quad core version of it internationally has 1GB of RAM. The LG Nexus 4 has the advantage here.

In regards to the display the LG Nexus 4 has the 4.7 inch screen which offers 318ppi and 1280 x 768 and it is True HD IPS. The Samsung Galaxy S3 come with 306ppi on its 4.8 inch display is Super AMOLED. The iPhone 5 now has a 4 inch display of IPS and it is 1136 x 640 and offers 306ppi. All the screens are great and the best will be down to what you want out of a display. Generally the IPS display is the most chosen as it does great in sunlight and offers realistic colours. Super AMOLED displays on the other hand are vibrant and the blacks are deep, but there are some that believe the display is hyper real. With IPS being the more realistic and brighter, and the LG Nexus 4 having the larger display, this has to be the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with 8GB or 16GB but you cannot expand it. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and you can boost storage up to another 64GB. The iPhone 5 offers the same internal storage, however it doesn’t have SD support, and so this means the winner has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has the 8 megapixel camera on the back, which has autofocus, LED flash and it can record at 1080p. It also comes with a 1.3MP camera on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel too and a 1.9 on the front. The back camera has support for LED flash and autofocus. The iPhone 5 is not left out as it too has the 8 megapixel camera, which has support for LED flash and autofocus. The front camera is 1.2 megapixel. Each of the cameras have their own pros and cons. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is able to take pictures and record video together, PhotoSphere is on the LG Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5 comes with the BSI sensor, which is great for low light photos.  The winner here thanks to the great sensor is the iPhone 5.

The LG Nexus 4 has Jelly Bean 4.2 and the iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has Jelly Bean 4.1, after being updated. If you are looking for an OS that is streamlined then it would have to be iOS 6. However if it is customisation that you want then you cannot beat Android. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 both have Android, however if you want fast updates then it would have to be the Nexus 4. In the end the OS is a matter of personal preference and so there is no clear winner.

The battery on the LG Nexus 4 is 2100mAh, which should provide you with around 15 hours of use. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 both have similar batteries that offer around 8 hours of use. In recent tests by AnandTech, the iPhone 5 was the winner, followed by the Galaxy S3 and the Nexus 4 in last place. The winner therefore has to be the iPhone 5.

The LG Nexus 4 measures 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm and it weighs 129 grams, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6mmx70.6mmx8.6mm and weighs 133 grams and the iPhone 5 comes in at 112 grams and is 123.8mmx58.6mmx7.6mm. In terms of design and looks the Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5 are both winners as they look outstanding. The iPhone 5 is the lightest and it also happens to be the thinnest and so it has to be the winner though.

You can get the LG Nexus 4 for $299 for the 8GB handset; while the 16GB would set you back $349. This is at Google Play Store and without a contract. If you want the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3, not on contract, then you would have to find around $550. The iPhone 5 will cost upwards of $650 for the starter model. Thanks to the low price tag the winner has to be the LG Nexus 4.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nexus 4 from LG both have support for NFC, while the iPhone 5 does not. The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 support LTE and the LG Nexus 4 doesn’t. If you want both LTE and NFC on the same device then you would have to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Conclusion: The Samsung Galaxy S3 took 2 categories here, while the LG Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5 both took three. So between the two winning devices, if you want a handset that is very easy to use and which comes with a great design and camera, then it would have to be the iPhone 5. On the other hand if you want value for money, plenty of customisation and a superb display, then you could go for the LG Nexus 4.
