Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3: Best Phone Of 2012

By  |

Older or newer, which should you choose? The Samsung Galaxy S3, LG Nexus 4 or Apple iPhone 5?

The oldest handset of the three is the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it came out in May 2012. The Apple iPhone 5 comes next as it was revealed in September and the LG Nexus 4 was the latest device to be released, in November.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in two different versions. Internationally this is the quad cored with 1GB of RAM, while in the US it is a dual core with 2GB of RAM. The LG Nexus 4 runs off a quad core processor of 1.5GHz and the Apple iPhone 5 runs on the Apple A5 processor. This means that out of the three the Apple iPhone 5 is the slowest; however it does beat its predecessor. The LG Nexus 4 comes out on top as it has quad core processors and 2GB of RAM.

You get pure Android 4.2 with the LG Nexus 4, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has ICS out of the box, but this has been updated to Jelly Bean 4.1 since. The iPhone runs on iOS 6.1. Android devices are the best for anyone who wants to be able to customise their device and the LG Nexus 4 will get updates faster than the Samsung Galaxy S3. Here you might choose between the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

You can get the LG Nexus 4 with 8GB or 16GB, but there is no chance of boosting storage externally. The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand supports SD card up to 64GB and it comes in 16GB or 32GB internal storage. The Apple iPhone 5 lacks support for SD card and you can get it in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions.

If you want a display of 4.7 inches True HD IPS then you could choose the LG Nexus 4 as it comes with 318ppi and a resolution of 1136 x 640. The Apple iPhone 5 has the retina display of 4 inches and this provides 206ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a Super AMOLED screen and this is 4.8 inches, plus it as 306ppi and resolution of 1280 x 720. Displays are just a matter of personal choice, however the IPS displays are better for viewing outside and the device has colours that are typically more realistic. Out of the devices here the LG Nexus 4 offers the largest of the IPS screens and this means that it comes out in top.

There is a battery of 2100mAh on the LG Nexus 4, which should offer around 15 hours use. With the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 you should get around 8 hours of use. In benchmark tests by AnandTech the iPhone did come out on top for battery life while the Samsung Galaxy S3 followed and the Apple iPhone 5 followed on in last place.

The LG Nexus 4 is 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm and weighs 129 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a weight of 122 grams and it measures 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm. Out of the three devices the Apple iPhone 5 is the smallest, lightest and it also happens to be the thinnest, with great looks. Of course the LG Nexus 4 also has great looks.

One thing that does let down the Apple iPhone 5 is that it doesn’t come with NFC. The LG Nexus 4 doesn’t have LTE, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 brags as it comes with both.

The handsets have 8 megapixel cameras; they have support for autofocus and 1080p video. There is a 1.3 camera on the front of the LG Nexus, a 1.9 on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and a 1.2 on the Apple iPhone 5. The LG Nexus brags off Photosphere, the Samsung Galaxy S3 happens to take video and photos at the same time, while the Apple iPhone 5 is best known for taking photos in low light conditions.

Verdict: Anyone who wants a device that should be easy to use may wish to consider the Apple iPhone 5. The device has superb looks, along with a superb camera too. Its downsides include a more restricted OS when it comes to personalization, non-removable battery or SD card support, smallest display and no NFC. The LG Nexus 4 comes with hardware that is great, however it does lack LTE and the storage is very low. The price tag is superb as you can pick up the device for around $299 though. The winner is the Samsung Galaxy S3 even though it is the oldest of the devices. It has the largest storage, it comes with the biggest screen, intuitive S-features, a great processor and plenty of connectivity choices (NFC, LTE, MHL, micro HDMI out, DLNA). The battery is swappable too and now that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is out the price of the S3 has come down to as low as $450 in many places.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, PC, iPhone and Android games keep Berke busy at work all day. Honestly though we’re not sure why we’re paying him as it should be the other way around.
